Hi Guys..
Would you believe Ive just come from a fella's house (Ray) who has an '83 944 Auto. I am becoming a real stalker as far as the 944 is concerned[&:]

Ray says it goes well but is an absolute nightmare to start in the morning. Once she is up and running she is fine but this problem is really p**sing him off and he dosent really drive it much due to it...

I am not too well clued in as far as the NA 944 is concerned.. Ray has changed out dizzy cap, leads, and plugs to no avail (Hes a Jag Mk2 man can you tell [:D])

Where do I start.....?[:'(]

Cheers lads

Do you mean it won't start as in it won't catch at all or the engine will catch but it dies again?

The reason I ask is that mine won't idle when the engine is cold at the moment as the idle control valve is stuck so to start it I have to hold it at low revs with the accelerator for a couple of minutes until it warms up a bit.

For <£20 I'd buy a new dme relay anyway, but you could try changing it with a working one. Yours for example? [8|]

Hi,

Sounds like the car has a cold start issue. The 944 has an AFM (Air Flow Meter), idle control valve and a cold start enrichment sender that could all contribute to this problem.

Car should be started with no throttle. Check that the fuel pump runs when the engine is cranking (DME Relay). Make sure the spark plugs are gapped correctly and there is a healthy spark. Check fuel pressure at the rail also.

I would look at the cold start circuit. A sender is mounted on the engine that signals the ECU. If you look at the ECU connector assignments, there is a test to fool the ECU into thinking the engine is cold. This will require the 944 N/A manual to assist (available from the ????.com website - somebody else will have to mention the website). From what you decribe; this seems most likely.

Regards,
Andrew

Thanks Guys for your help....
Wigeon thats right it catches but dies soon after. You have to keep playing with the throttle and do as you said keep the throttle cracked open till it warms up abit..... I am going over tonight to Ray .. Its a quick job to change the DME so I'll start with that.... I'll let yous know how it all goes....! [;)]

what did you find in the end ?
Mine is suffering something very similar at the moment . I've checked most things I'm convinced its a blocked fuel filter Ran it empty one day by mistake (lets not go there ) ever since its been a devil to start. I think I may have some water or crud in the filters.
