944 Belts - something else to worry about

A new rattle developed from the timing case of the Turbo the other day - immediately put it back in the garage until I could take a look at it - as far as I am concerned any noise in the belt case is just not worth the risk. It was the right move...

The belts were changed last year, no obvious sign of a problem then, the car has only covered a couple of thousand miles in that time.

The rattle was subtle, but obvious, other than that no real warning apart from Neil Haughey of this parish thought he could hear a whine that to him was slightly unusual... nobody else could mind! I guess we will know when we put it back together and Neil can't hear the whine any more...

I have never come accross this before on any 944. I would be interested to hear if any of the independants have. Hopefully it is just a particularly unlucky one-off.

What is it where looking at? Is it some sort of pully/idler guide/lip that has sheared off? do you know where it originates? I've certainly not seen anything like this in all my time on this forum.

For reference, this is a picture of my spare scrap engine, which shows what it should look like, though a little less rusty!

Yep, the mangled piece of metal resting on the top is the front guide of the upper balance shaft pulley. If you look at the pulley you can see where the metal has sheared at the hub.

How recent is the pulley Tref? The metal left on the pulley still looks pretty shiny (well, it does compared to the rusty one on your spare engine)

I am guessing it is the same age as the car ('86) as it is not one of those that is normally replaced.

Hi mate, that is a relief to find that. Seems like my perfectionist hearing has possibly saved your engine [:)]. Having said that I wish I didn't have this affliction, every little rattle, squeak or noise drives me mad [:D]

Having said that though it will be a handy excuse for when the racing isn't going to well "I had to slow down I heard a noise" [:D]

Ah the old gravel in the hub-caps trick will work a treat on Neil! You'll have no trouble with him on the race-track!
