However it has ABS and that was discontinued after '89 MY, any ideas anybody.Where does the list of vins live, does the register hold one?
Hi Mac, Not on our Register. Can't say i've ever heard of an ali-body 944 cab, or one that had discontinued ABS? I'd be happy to be educated though! If you want to trace it's origin then Barry Smith is the contact between us and Porsche. Obviously they can't reply to every owner with a query, so we direct them through the Club system. [:)]

Friend of mine has bought a Cab with the reg K1 WEM the vin is WPOZZZ94ZMN430476430476 It says in the front of the owners handbook that it has aluminium bodywork. It seems like it might be one of the very last ones. However it has ABS and that was discontinued after '89 MY, any ideas anybody.Where does the list of vins live, does the register hold one?

Do Porsche keep a record of warranty and service work carried out that can be made available to subsequent owners ?, BMW customer services are willing to provide this info on their cars.

No. It is all held at dealer level (or at least was several years ago when 944s saw dealers with any regularity) and hence if the dealer is still going they have it, but if they are no longer around then the data is probably lost. Don't know what the stuff about alu body is - there is no alu bodywork on any production 944; even the extra bits the cab has are polyurethane (the covers where they chopped the roof off along the rear quarters and across the boot closure). ABS was not discontinued in 1989; why would it be? It might in fact have become standard in 1989 after being offered as an option (in some markets, possibly including the UK) since 1987 when the suspension was redesigned to allow it to be fitted. Did it possibly get dropped from the options code sticker then as it was a standard fitment globally from that year, perhaps?

That's a pity, apart from the service book, some Hartech stickers on the fusebox and a pile of MOTs I didn't get a lot of paperwork with my car.

Hey, I am only going by what I was told about the car it is coming to me for a service and general look over soon, so I will check out the claims about ali panels with a big magnet. I will take it to Barry for a look also.As far as the ABS is concerned ,in the "pure data section" of the GT Porsche mag quote" 1989 944 gets ABS as standard discontinued at end of model year " unquote. Not having any more authorative info I took that as correct. However reading a bit more carefully they may need some hints at punctuation. Thanks for help ,I will update you later on the panels.

GT Poorly Porsche has a rep for badly researched articles so do not take anything they say as fact. I vagualy remember a reference to care of aluminium panels in my '90 Coupe handbook, I think the only potentially aluminium panel is the sunroof and that would be missing on a cab. Unfortunately my manual is several thousand miles away at the moment so I cant check the wording. Tony Hatch frame is alloy also not on cab.

Well the letter 'M' in the MN430476 puts it down as a 1991 chassis and the last 3 digits of 430476 puts it down as the 476th one made that year. I've never heard of any major aluminium panels either [&:] <anorak on> For interest :- DN is a 1983 model EN is a 1984 model etc all the way up to MN is a 1991 model The N signifies they were built at the Neckarsulm factory and not in Stuttgart. <anorak off> [8|]

Thanks Paul, that bit of info is useful, well to my new and excited about his purchase 944 owner anyway I wonder what the number of cars produced in that year was, it looks like a job for Sherlock Barry.[:D]
