944 cab roof

I have just tried to open the roof on my cab and there was a bad grinding noise from the n/s winder. The roof tried to open, then distorted and jammed. Does anyone know if this is the winder mechanism failing and if so what is the proceedure for fixing the problem?

The only way to really find out what is going on is to strip sown the winders. In case you don't know - the motor is under the rear parcel shelf. When it spins it operates two cables that run down either side behind the rear quarter panels into a rack and pinion system that pivots the roof uprights. I've had mine apart and serviced them, but yours sounds as though it might be the toothed cable that runs to the motor. If the system has not been maintained and lubricated it may be putting too much strain on the teeth and stripped some of them.

If you search enough on the web there are some details drawings of how the whole mechanism works.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply. I didn't know how the system worked. This has help a lot by giving me an idea of what to look for.

Hi,
I know this is not related to your problem but I am sure you can help me. I have just bought a 92 Cab and as i get in and out of the car I find myself adjusting the driver and passenger windows to prevent them from bending and give a good seal to the roof. Is this the way it is?
Thanks
Dave

Ideally it shouldn't be, but when I had my cab I used to have to open and close the door when I put the window up to get a good seal.

This is not just a problem with Porsche Cab's. Friends of mine with other older convertables have the same problem. It shouldn't be this way. Once I get the roof fixed this is my next challenge.
