944 Central locking died

Request for suggestions here -

A short while ago, our central locking has "died" on our '85 944 Lux. We can no longer even lock / unlock either door with the key. When the key is turned in either of the locks, I can hear a relay clicking around the base of the steering column (central locking controller?) Also, pressing the lock button just in front of the gearstick also gives the same clicking sound.

Checked the fuse & is fine - any suggestions? Haven't pulled the central locking controller to bits yet, anyone else had similar problem? thanks
