944 cooling problem

Hi,
I drove the S2 home from work about 35 miles with no apparent problems, then while ticking over while I opened the garage door the temperature rocketed. The fans had already cut in but to no avail. There was some coolant that looked quite oily dripping off the back of the undertray. The following day I pulled the plugs out and did a compression test with each cylinder around 165-170 PSI which would tend to indicate the head gasket was OK, topped up the coolant which took about 4 litres and started her up. There didn't seem to be any pressurising of the cooling system but the drip started again. Is there some sort of oil/water matrix or separator in the system which could be the cause or possibly the water pump?

Guessing no obvious leak.

There is a water cooled oil cooler on the side of the block - the oil filter is mounted on it - and is a regular source of problems as the oil and water obviously get close.

It is a s*d of a job to change gasket in situ, but possible.

Is there any water in the oil?

Is the water coming from the overflow? - check coolant cap - a recent problem for me!

AFAIK, the S2s did away with this and came with an aircooled oil cooler. I am pretty sure that mine is air cooled too.

Correct S2 & turbo has separate oil cooler piped from the filter housing, totally different to the 2.5 & 2.7 N/A engines.
 
Thanks for the replies, I haven't had chance to investigate further.When I do I'll keep you posted.
 
Hi,
Quick follow up. Put the car up on the ramp today, took the undertray off and coolant can be seen dripping from between the two halves of the cambelt cover. I'm guessing from this that the water pump is the offending component. So pump and belts next job! Cheers for now.
