944 driving lights

Hi All,

Has anyone on here made any modifications to their lights on a 944s or Turbo? Specifically I have an issue with a cracked lens on my driving/fog light and trying to source a decent second hand unit (for any price, let alone a sensible one) has proved impossible so far. I'm happy to explore updates which are aesthetically pleasing so I'm not overly concerned with keeping things 'original' and wondered if anyone else had tried anything? I've been thinking about projector lights with some sort of perplex cover plate made to fit the aperture for example... or maybe LED lights these days would be a god way to go...?

I considered converting to 2 or 3 mini projector lamps each side so I wouldn't have to raise the pop ups, but I thought it wouldn't look right. I thought the fog/driving glass was available on it's own ?

There used to be a couple of suppliers who sold air ducts to go where the original front driving/fog lamps were, which included a round twin element lamp for fog and flash.

I can get hold of all the different original components new, the glass that chips, the rear plastic section with the corroding fasteners, the adjusters, reflectors, trims and mini looms all indivually, but they are not cheap, but then again none of the parts are very fast movers for Porsche, so I expect production runs for their manufacturer and short and therefore expensive.

Hi Jon

Hope you are well....I wasn't aware that the components could be bought separately....do you have a price for the glass alone please?..

cheers

Pete

+1 on that Jon. I bet there are a few on here would be interested in new glass given as said above the ridiculous peice for even a second hand ropey unit.

I seem to recall discussion elsewhere (possibly on TIPEC) about a lorry lamp unit that would fit in the space. It was a millimetre or so narrower than the Porsche unit (i.e. close enough to probably not notice the difference) and had two light elements in it. I recall the guy who suggested the idea got a lot of flak about the fact that the bumper would need to be modified a little to make it work, and it all went quiet from then on. The big appeal was the the part was dirt cheap - in the teens of pounds or so.

It would probably be a good option for someone to explore to maintain the longevity of the cars. Failing that, the air-scoop idea would be a good one.

Oli.

I suspect these are as rare as hen's teeth now. I bought one on ebay years ago for about £60. The other option is to search Germany or US for a unit (although not sure if lens would be suitable). I have a NSF 1990 unit (with cracked glass) kicking around my garage, if anyone is interested :p

87 turbo driving light glass is still showing as available in PET as of last year

951 631 221 00 at a staggering £197.00 for each side, or the combined lamp unit is £318.00 each

Hi All, my glass is cracked which is then corroding the chrome and the mounting points are also corroded so really it a whole unit replacement. £318 isn't bad for a complete new unit (compared to whatt I've seen elsewhere...) what is PET Waylander? I might have a look into it.
The idea of a cheap similar unit is good. Not just cos' it's cheap but because parts are becoming hard to find. Cheapest I've had offered from a breakers was £250 per side but they weren't in a condition worth paying that much for after all they were over 20 years old!

Lamp units are Right Hand £130 and strangely the Left Hand is £179. Prices include VAT and delivery to the U.K

Official Porsche retail price for the complete units is £265.07 for the complete unit and £164.34 for the front section (framed glass lens) with the side trims being £39.65 per sided set. all Plus VAT and if you are a PCGB member your local OPC will probably give you 10% discount.

Rose Passion seem to be these retail prices except for one of the two front sections they seem to do for £114 which is interesting. Not sure if they are Bosch boxed or Genuine boxed.

Porsche and Bosch only list the whole unit, front section on its own or the side trims.

The pain to get hold of was always the rear section where the screws corrode into the captive nuts which then rip out the plastic backing but no one used to sell them, I can get hold of them, but they are blooming expensive for a mostly plastic item.

Not sure what I pay to Bosch for all the individual parts or as a whole unit as we do not get much call for them these days, but I can find out if anyone is interested.

Wolfie, are those prices for the complete lamps, or just the front sections?

Hi Jon, prices are for the lamp units not including the backing cases. The complete assemblies are quoted at £283 inc VAT and shipping for both sides. However, looking closely, this is an indicative price......you will actually be charged 400.73 Euros, so it will depend on the exchange rate your bank/credit card company apply at the time of purchase.

Today's rate is approx. 1.37 which would equate to about £292.50

I feel guilty now for hoarding mine from when the race car was built back in 2009/2010. I had one which was brand new complete with less than 5k miles on it, the other was built from the best parts of the two originals. As Jon notes I ended up replacing one of mine as the glass had cracked but the back of one of them was shot as they break up, luckily the 2 units had a good set of halfves between them. Both units complete sat in a box for 6 years wrapped up in paper.
