944 electric window stops working

Hoping someone has had the same issue as I have had my door card off 8 times now!

My 1986 944 had a spare drivers window motor with it when I bought the car. Two months into ownership my window one was up and not working, I stripped the door down, took out the motor took and fitted the other one and all working fine for about 3 weeks, I did try the other motor and found out that both motors work. 2 years later I'm still finding the same issue. I take the door card off, loosen the motor bolts to take it out and suddenly it works again. I thought it was the stop positions last time but they don't seem to make much difference. I am wondering if there are some shims required to line up the glass and mine are missing, think the next step might be to take off the passenger door card to see how that is fitted as no issues ever with that side.

Any help appreciated.

Best
Keith

While I didn't have your experience I needed to replace the drivers door window regulator and the window had "slipped" in its track to which the regulator attached. Don't ask how that happened - lets just say freezing rain and an absence of common sense. Anyway - to reposition the window I needed to strip the passenger side to measure the glass placement in the track. Whilst doing this the wires literally fell out of the passenger side window switch. I was able to re-solder the wires so all was OK in the end. The key part is that the drivers side has two switches - one controls the passenger side - and the passenger switch has multiple wires coming in as another switch can control it. You might find you have a similar problem with loose connections which could explain your intermittent operation. Worth a check if you are taking things apart anyway.

This might be a long shot, but have you checked the condition of the fuse and holder for the electric windows?

Worth checking the switches? My driver's window sometimes refuses to go back up...usually after a damp spell and if I've not been careful enough to keep the interior dry. When it's all dry, no problem. I reckon the damp gets at the switch. New switches are on the do list...

Having stripped both front doors possibly 2 years ago ,fitted one new but S/H lift motor to the drivers door & stripped .freed ,regreased the passenger door motor/gearbox I recently ,as I started to recommission the red 924S after being sorned for the last 12 mths, found the windows were playing up -they dropped but wouldn't lift.
The problem was the switch contacts in the driver's door 2 switches-the solution was to remove the switches, strip them down to the components ,clean the copper contact spring points with a fine points file & re-assemble using Vaseline(a saviour for many problems on cars).
Once refitted ,everything worked as normal[:)]
Colin.

Many thanks for the advice, I am now thinking both motors are faulty/lazy, when I press the switch I can see a small load on the voltmeter and ignition light very slightly dims. Off again with the door card....

Hopefully I'm not going to take over your thread. Window problems seem pretty common. My passenger window is very slow to operate and only goes down about halfway. Where to start? switch, motor, mechanism??

Hi Eddie

It's probably a combination of things. Wiring, oxidation, motor needing lubricant, mech needing lubricant, possibly not the switch, although it could be. You could start with a new switch, ECP do a non OEM switch for about a tenner, I've bought one and they work just fine, a tad less "clunky" than the original, but good and look spot on. Hi-Tech or something like that. I presume it is quicker when you use the passenger door switch than the one on the driver side?

Mine works fine but tends to move down quicker with the switch on the passenger side.
