Please excuse my ignorance in this matter but I have yet to find a good diagram that clearly points out the main components of the engine. I've finally got round to having a good go at locating my oil leak. I've had the car running over a nice clean white sheet with the undertray off after cleaning the underside from oil as best I could. I ran the car for a good 10 to 15 mins with no signs of dripping then switched off the engine. I checked back after 10 mins - nothing. I checked again after a further 10 mins and hey presto there was a spot of oil on the white sheet. I crawled under the car to investigate and spotted the source. Unfortunately I don't know what it is - I think it's the oil pump. I'll try to explain: If you imagine looking at the engine front on, there is a plastic cover over the main train pulleys and belts. My oil leak is coming from the unit that is driven by the lower left hand side pulley (next to the powersteering pump). Is this the oil pump?

I tried to take a photo but it isn't too clear.

Thanks.

I'm not best to ask, but I can tell you the oil pump is driven by the end of the crankshaft (which passes through it). Maybe you are seeing a balance shaft seal leaking?

It turned out to be the lower balance shaft housing. Aparently it bolts to the underside of the engine and there is a gasket between. Top marks to Fen. After speaking to my trusted Porsche Specialist he has advised that while i'm at it I may as well consider having all the front engine seals replaced since the kit is quite cheap and it's not a huge amount more work once the belt cover and belts have been removed. Anyone got any experiance of having this work done and how many manhours it should take??

I have had it done - most of us have as it usaually gets done when the tensioners and idlers get replaced and that in turn is usually every second belt change. It doesn't add an awful lot to the labour for a belt change but I don't know exactly how much.
