944 engine mounts

I will need to replace the engine mount (the one near the exhaust) in my cab and wonder if its better to replace both at the same time. Will I notice big difference with the new mounts?

Are the engine mounts the same across the 944 range?

Only the hydraulic ones from the S2 and turbo are now available and they are the updated replacement for all models, including the solid mounts of the earlier cars.

The one on the exhaust side on my S2 was shot but I did not noticed any difference after replacement.
 
Despite from many viewers of this thread - there is only one reply (thanks TTM), I assume many onwers have done the mounts yet. I may just get the two mounts replaced to save extra labour cost (3-4 hours?) I suppose.

I wonder what are the main symptoms of failed engine mounts? vibration?

Hi Charles, I noticed a big difference when my engine mounts were replaced ,the car felt much tighter. The soundproofing under the bonnet also gets damaged by the engine moving about. The usual method of replacement is to suspend the engine on an engine hoist and unbolt the old units and replace them with the new ones.The tracking is not disturbed as it would be if done from underneath.

I thought this was the other way around? Our lux needed another engine mount, usual symptom is vibration at idle if im right?

anyway it was replaced with a solid one, so you can still get them.
 
Got one of mine done soon after I got the car (amongst a whole host of other things!) and certainly noticed the difference in reduced vibration and increased smoothness.
 
I was told they only do the hydralic one now for the 944. The OEM costs twice as the non-OEM ones but I guess its worth getting the OEM parts. Is it better to replace both at the same time or it really doesn't matter.

You should be able to measure the gap on the inlet side easily to see if it needs doing. The exhaust side usually goes much earlier though, as the engine is canted over that way plus the heat from the exhaust.

I can't figure out why there was no vibrations at all before replacement. The car definitely did not feel like it was in need of a new one. Any idea ?

Exactly. The indy reckons the new mount will stop the vibration which also travels thru the pedals which I hardly noticed they exist.

I'm just in the process of an engine mount replacement for both sides - not that it desparately needed doing, but I work on the basis that rubber mounts (especially hydraulic ones) do age after 19yrs.....

Top tip (which Clarks DOESN'T tell you...), undo the steering shaft from the steering rack, having marked the position with tipex.

If you don't you'll damage the UJ at one or either of the ends. Also, bear in mind that when you suspend the engine it will cant over towards the exhaust side because of the uneven weight - can be difficult to line up the mounts.
