944 Engine Vibration

Hi
My recently purchased 944 Lux oval dash has been runnung a treat until I have noticed in the last week a slight vibration in the engine which wasn't there 2 weeks ago. I know it has counter rotating shafts driven off ( I think) a single drive belt. Can this slip/stretch and start a vibration off.
Is this a bit like a cam belt and could cause mayhem if it breaks!?

The shafts you refer to are known as the balance shafts. They cancel out harmonic vibrations from the engine. That's part of what makes them so good. It is possible for them to slip a tooth although unlikely I think. Do you know the history of the belts? I.e. when they were last changed. Any more info about the vibration i.e. under acceleration, tickover, hard load etc?
 
Yes the belt going will indeed cause mayhem so if you have doubts about it I would advise not running the engine until its checked out. If its a bit of vibration noticeable at idle then a failed engine mount may be the culprit.

Whilst I agree that a cambelt going will cause proper mayhem a balance belt should in theory fail safe. Unless of course it snaps completely and wipes out the cam belt as they are in such close proximity. An engine mount was actually the way my train of thought was going.

The car had new uprated ( Turbo) engine mounts last February but in the service history, which is a bit patchy, there is no mention of belt changes.

The car has done 202,000 miles and when I bought it 3 months ago was completely vibration free - I checked that specifically - and is what I would describe immaculate but I guess that doesn't mean previous owners looked after the engine as well as they looked after the body and interior.

I think prudence tells me a trip to a specialist is called for to get the car looked at. The previous owner lavished £000's of pounds on the car as I have a wad of receipts 4" thick but strangely enough nothing to do with belts.

Does anyone know a good ( inexpensive!) specialist in East Anglia where I could go

I would recommend Autostrasse in Coggeshall, Essex. Not quite East Anglia but pretty close ! Have used them a number of times and just a short drive down the A12..
 
I've just bought my Lux, and when I drove it back from Birmingham to Plymouth I thought it wasn't as smooth as i remember when I first test drove it. After I got back to Plymouth, I took the cambelt cover off, and found the balance belt lying at the bottom. Cambelt is in one piece, though. Have been told I was lucky as when the balance belt breaks it usually whips the cambelt off.

Recommend you have a look before you drive far, in case the balance belt has broken, so you can get the remains out. Then at least it can't destroy the cambelt.

Mine's off for new belts tomorrow. Not looking forward to the bill...
