944 Fest in '911 & Pork World'

Just got my Nov 2005 copy of 911 & Pork World.

p 106 a really nice article about Mark Koeberle's 'Tech9'd' and 'Promaxed' turbo -- those of you who know Mark & the car will understand how immaculate it is. Coincidentally enjoyed some tracking with him at Snetterton last wed 12th -- it is a small world.

p 80 then Reading FC's goalkeeper from the States called Marcus Hahnemann has a 'full on' 3 litre turbo, with loads of tuning parts -- very informative article to those that are going in this direction (Paul S -- how is yours progressing?)

Rumour has it that 968's might get an article in the next issue -- for a moment there I thought us S3'ers we were being ignored!!

2 944 articles in one month? I guess we'll be waiting 'till Xmas 2007 for the next one then....... [:mad:]

The 968 article may be a write up from the track day that Stuart Cookson organised at Oulton Park last weekend, there was a happy snapper with scribe in tow there on the day.
 
I really enjoyed the article on Marcus Hahnemann's car (I'm a bit of a Royals fan too). I can't believe that he spent less than 10k on it, but then he did have some parts from his old car, and the LHD car he started with must have been pretty cheap. I live just next to Reading's training ground, so I will have to look out for it. It has got me thinking about what I could do with the money I got for my 968....[;)]

If he spent less than £300 on new fixings and hoses then he was scrimping.

I would have to suggest that that car is far closer to £20K than £10K although I've no doubt he has told his other half the lower figure.

When looking at the pictures I was given to wonder why the man was wearing a mountain bike racing helmet in a car. Another thought is why would anyone do all that to a car with the seat on the wrong side for going around tracks.




 
He is American, so probably prefers the seat on the wrong side! Should I ever bump into the big fella while out walking a dog I don't have, I'll ask him how much it really cost!

And the helmet was odd, I agree... respect due though, for the fact that he is obviously an enthusiast and didn't go and blow his wages on a footballers car!
 
Apparently he is using the stock S2 pistons and rods (presumably) of turbo dimensions as he says he could have used standard turbo ones. How is the compression ratio controlled then? Just whatever it happened to end up with using stock pistons and shorter rods? By this reckoning I could have a 3.0 in my car for the price of a block and crank plus a bit of fabrication of a waterway? What am I waiting for then...?[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]I have to say the whole thing sounds very budget to me - not necessarily a bad thing but with some corners cut. Do these "GT3 Big Red" calipers fit straight on the S2 hubs? I guess the Turbo he (presumably) crashed that donated an LSD could have been a 250 and donated the later hubs but then I suggest they are simply "Big Reds" not GT3 anything. Do standard 996 calipers fit the rear? How is he going to get 968 CS front discs to fit the rear?[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]In terms of price I think £20k is far closer to the mark than "under 10 grand" - you were very generous on seats, harnesses, roll cage etc. John. He has the cost of standalone a little high, possibly I see why if he only considered MoTeC. Anyway, if he's using stock S2 pistons and Turbo rods, he's going to end up with a standard S2 compression ratio of 10.9:1 [:eek:] which is not very good for even moderate boost applications. The Turbo rods are the same length as S2 rods, the S2 makes its 3.0 litres by having a 104mm bore (100mm in the 2.5) and a longer throw crank of 88mm (78.9mm in the 2.5)
 
Thought I'd knock up a quick table to show how the various engine capacities of a 944 are made:

Engine bore crank throw

2.5 100mm 78.9mm

2.7 104mm 78.9mm

2.8 100mm 88mm (also needs 145mm rods instead of standard 150mm)

3.0 104mm 88mm

3.1 106mm 88mm

It also says the S2 rods are not strong enough so he didn't use them, which suggests all 3 options are the same length to me and backs up Paul's confirmation that he's running standard S2 compression. I'm pretty sure he can't be though so maybe there is an error in fact in the 911&PW article?[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
I've finally found a copy of the magazine and read it myself. It does sound as if the rods are a standard length (though Pauter will make them any length you want), and it also mentions that his head is O ringed to 'improve sealing performance where higher compression ratios are used'. I think it all points to a standard compression ratio.

This is good for low rev pickup and driveability, and it does say the engine pulls strongly from 2000 rpm, but I wonder how long it would last if he turned the boost up past 1.4bar.

It's amazing how many different ways there are to tune our cars now. I find it fascinating and encouraging that there are now so many products on the market compared with a few years ago where it was solely AMD.

What I do like is the way he has mounted the Lindsey air-fuel and injector monitor in the heater vent. It's right at the same level as the dashboard and would be in your line of sight to easily keep an eye on things, especially as it is colour coded leds. I didn't realise that it worked with a wideband sensor.

I love the Naca ducts in the bonnet too, but I don't think they'd look as good in my Baltic Blue bonnet [:(]
 
It must be a pinking monster if it's running even 1 bar over an NA compression ratio I think. Also someone (BigDave?) was telling me just recently how S2 pistons have a shallow skirt and can twist in the bore and seize which must be more likely with increased compression.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]I quite like the ducting on the bonnet too, but where is that extra air going? I want to do something on my bonnet, but with the holes in the front panel already I think I have enough coming in and what I want is some means of letting the air out again to encourage more to come in the front and through the intercooler in the first place.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
