944 front indicator internals

afternoon guys

I'm in the middle of renovating my front indicators, lenses and housings are fine but the metal internals are kaput....has anyone found a source for just the metal bulb contact parts before I start trying to fabricate same?

Cheers

Pete

How shot are the metal bits? I'd be trying a scrappie (they must be very plentifully available) or an OPC if they can't be cleaned up.

Have you tried pickling them overnight in vinegar? That's pretty effective at removing grot and rust.

Hi Oli

they are well beyond pickling....the parts in the top of the picture are fine.. the lower ones are beyond help and these are the parts that give power to the bulbs so need to be replaced. I'm in the process of fabricating some new ones out of brass, should give better electrical contact and won't rust although can oxidise if they get wet again. I'll see how this works out if no one has found a supplier of the original parts, I'm a bit apprehensive in getting units from a scrap yard as there's no guarantee that they won't be the same.

Pete, for the reflective sections get some shiny pipe lagging tape, which you can cut and stick on, it comes in a 2" wide roll and is adhesive.

Afternoon all

I've had a busy day fabricating new metal internals for my indicators, I used what was left of the originals as templates and cut out some new bulb holders from brass sheet. Once shaped and folded they did the job although I'll have to leave the test until a get some new bulbs, the old ones had welded themselves in..lol

First picture shows the old component alongside it's fabricated replacement with one unit test fitted behind

And a picture of the completed units, I've given them a coat of aluminium paint for now but may do as Frenchy suggested and cover the parts in some reflective foil once I have some.

anyway I'm happy with the finished result and it's certainly better than spending a few hundred pounds on new units when there was nothing wrong with the lenses and housings themselves just to replace the failed internal metal parts.

Now I wonder what horrors await me with the fog lights....???.. that's for another day..:)

At Goodwood Festival of Speed last year there was an Audi on display with "Scanning" indicators... I must admit I thought that the 944 S2/Turbo lenses were the perfect shape to change into that form... I understand not legal for road use in the UK, but I am sure it must be possible to make LEDs that either scan or just flash in an indicator sort of way...
