944 fuel problems

ive had problems getting my 1986 944 auto started

have replaced the dme relay with no joy

so thought i would check the fuel flow so took off the end cap from the fuel rail connected a hose to it and ran it to a fuel can
cranked the engine over to get the fuel pumping and to my surprise the engine fired up although it would only idle as soon as the throttle was pressed the engine stalled.
put it back together and the engine will not start

any help please
