944 Fuel Sender Unit

Today I tried to remove the fuel sender from the tank as the gauge is reading full all the time, but found it impossible to get the plastic screw cap off. I've read some posts recommending using a 3 legged oil filter removal tool - it looks like a good idea but I wanted to see if anyone has any experience of these. There are a few available on eBay.

I was also wondering whether I need to renew the plastic cap when I put the new sender in - the repair manual says I do, but struggling to see where I'd get a new one. I also believe there is a seal underneath the cap which will need replaced - I think I should do this, but have no idea of the size or design. The manual doesn't say either. Is it just an O-ring ?

Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy

When it comes to gauges not reading correctly, I'd start by checking the gauge cluster itself before taking other things apart. These cars are getting on a bit and many if not all have gauges that give false readings...could be a dry solder joint or bad earth. May be prudent to start with the easy things first.

Hi Andy,

i had mine off not long ago to drain the tank and check the sender.

All i used was a large adjustable grip that I use for things like pushing calipers back or large caps like this. Mine was very tough probably not been off in over 30 years but with these it was ok with a bit of force.

As for the seal I actually can’t rememwbr exactly but I think it was like a rubber doughnut type washer ? I remember there being nothing visually wrong with mine and I put everything back the way it was with no problem.

may be best to check what petes suggested first if it’s easier.

Good luck
Daniel

Thanks for the feedback folks. The instrument cluster has problems for sure as the odo and trip don't work and the handbrake and oil pressure warning lights flicker all the time. I was going to send it away to be fixed anyway, so maybe thats the way forward. Is it easy enough to remove though ?

Good that the seal is available from Porsche - I'll take a look online or drop in when I'm in Aberdeen next.

Removing the cluster will only take a few minutes...IIRC remove the wheel, remove screws under the top lip and the bottom,,, sorry can't remember all details but it should be described on the 'Clarks Garage' website which btw is a must for 944 owners. Odo and trip is very common, you will find the gear required on eBay and how to fix it on Clark's Garage. Handbrake light is likely to be the tab that connects to the switch on the handbrake lever, might need cleaning or just squeezing closed a little. Oil pressure could be dirty contacts or failing switch. like all things on these cars, it's better to check connections before buying anything as the components are very good quality and will last for many years....

the screw cap part of the sender is 951 201 375 00 Union Nut @ £46.68, the seal is 944 201 327 00 @ £5.92

Just to follow up on this I visited my local Porsche dealer and got the sender seal - just over £5. I must say though they treat you very well ! The parts advisor seemed genuinely interested that I have a 944 !
