944 Haynes Manual - US?

Hi guys,

Quick question, want to get my own proper Haynes manual for the 944, and they still have paper back versions for sale - but note it is for "US specification" cars -

http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=14127&langId=-1

What differences if any would there be or I should be aware of between US and UK/Europe built 944's?

I dunno, maybe some more heat shielding for hotter climates possibly.

Not worth the paper it is written on! Don't waste your money, get a copy of the genuine Porsche manual.

The Haynes manual is a complete waste of time. The genuine Porsche workshop manuals are available on-line in pdf format - infinitely better.

Really?

Blimey ... ok thanks guys! I've not owned a Haynes before but was hoping it would give me a detailed break down and diagrams for everything under the car ... seeing as I'm such a n00b to these things, I want to learn how everything works and the names for things - plenty of times I've been told 'oh you need to look at xxxx' and have no idea what they're on about!!

The Porsche workshop manuals ... where can I get these? Thanks! :)

Out of interest though ... is there any difference between US and UK/Europe made 944's?

I'm no expert on US spec 944's but I would imagine the main differences from a DIY/ hands on perspective are:

1. Lighting - all geared to LHD
2. Pedal and steering gear - Brake Master Fluid reservoir will feed clutch as well, brake pedal direct rather on a bar across the dashboard - different steering rack, shaft and front cross-member
3. Bumpers and trim - different impact regs in the US
4. Engine tuning/ emissions - not sure how this manifests itself but generally US cars have been slightly lower on power and tuned differently.

Hope this helps, and as per the rest of the posts - Haynes is useless, use the 6 separate PDF workshop manuals for your particular car - much of the 944 work is common sense/ good engineering practice.

I've got the Haynes 944 manual (got it with my car). It's nice if you get a bit stuck but most of the time it doesn't even cover what you want or is just vague enough to be of no use at all. It also has a nice habit of never having the torque figures for the bolt you need to tighten up.

As an extra/ second thought if you're new to 944 tinkering the following web pages are very good for providing a visual of how everything hangs togethers:

http://www.dcauto.gotdns.com/?mode=year&year=1989-1991&model=944-2

I've got a 924 (uk) and a 944 (usa) Haynes and for my early ('83) 944 I find them useful as a general read for overall views and to have around!
Not much use for far too many jobs!

I have a Haynes for the 924 and UK 944, which I bought when I had my 924S and very useful they were for that car but the 944 one states on the front 1983-1986 single and twin cam models but no sign of a twin cam model and all the stuff detailed is for pre-oval dash models, still like I said useful for the 924S and early models, with the 924 one for the bodywork of the 924S.

Thanks guys I found the workshop manuals on Cannell website ... I'll get myself to a printers and have them done, bit heavy reading in PDF docs :D

If the Haynes gives a decent overall view then I might get anyway if it's only £15.

clarks garage - http://www.clarks-garage.com/ - is also a great resource for easy to follow how-to's on common procedures.

As Paul has said Promax is a good place to call, they have the whole workshop manual available to download.

Clarke's are ideal as well, as for Haynes if you can get one for free go for it as a quick ref guide but thats about it
