944 Heater

Does anyone know why my heater on my 1988 944 will only work on full heat or cold? It changes over at the 9 o'clock posistion on the controller, I have tried another control unit, but this made no difference, but then again i can't guarantee it was a good one! All theories greatly appreciated[8|]
