944 in Australia

I have just accepted a job in Sydney. This leaves me with a bit of a dilemma. I love my 944S2 and it's red [:D] so obviously looks brilliant! I have two options.....I can 'container' the car over which will cost me around £2k including Aus Gov taxes or sell it here in the UK. I reckon the car is worth £4500 here in the UK, 120,000 miles, fsh, cills waxed, linen porsche logo interior, good pantwork, cup alloys, 3 spoke steering wheel, lavished with tlc, etc. It has Janspeed (double exit) SS exhaust and de-cat with the Promax Stage 1 chip kit (filter, chip & plugs) but no other mods. Suspension was next on the list, though to be honest it handles very well!

Are there any Australian members who could advise on prices down under at the moment, be interesting to see the viability of shipping then selling over there if I had too or even selling here and buying a similar condition model on arrival.

Congrats at the job, what a fab opportunity!

On the face of it I'd say take it with you, better the devil you know and all that but I have no idea if they'll be any impact on obtaining parts, servicing, registration etc..

What the heck will happen to the other motors then? Maybe hire a yacht and take them all and yourself over!? [:D][;)]

Patrick (333pg333) is our resident Aussie and generally logs on most days so hopefully can advise how the 944 market is down under

Checked out Aus 'Auto Trader' and there are very few 944's there and only two S2's both cabrio. They seem to be in good condition, no rust obviously but are selling for £15,000 (A$30,000)! They do all have air con which I don't......may sell in Scotland as I do have a fully functioning heater [;)]

I am taking the BMW M635CSi.....I hate leaving things half finnished!

Hi Colin
Check the Porsche Clubs web sites here in Australia. One of the Guards red S2 cabs may have been my mates, its been for sale for best part of a year now so will come a lot cheaper, he now has a Black 968 cab, before we came over i looked at bring my 911 Turbo, and selling it on arival but you must have owned it for 2 years or more in the UK and can not sell in Oz for 2 years, so i sold it was before we left, its cheap to bring money. Body work on cars in Oz is mostly good we have no salt on the roads in the winter just need to be carful they have not lived in a coastal area.

Colin, unfortunately not much joy either way you look at it in terms of selling here or there. I would consider bringing it down with you depending on how long you realistically think you might be here. (Many come over for 3 months and stay for the rest of their lives[:)]) If you've owned it for more than 2 years your halfway there and if you possibly think you'll be here for at least 2 years, then at least selling it here is a possibility too. As for the price of Porsches or any foreign cars, well you're in for a rude shock however our fuel is cheaper than yours. I bought my '89 951 for a bit over $30k au and have easily spent that again on it (it's a LOOONNNNNGGGGG story []) so if you sell yours in the UK you won't get anything over here that's any good nor is there a lot of choice. As Bob mentions above, they tend to be in pretty good nick though.
Let me know if you need any more advice.

Thanks for the info Patrick. Although I must say hasn't made my desicion making process any easier! I have owned the car for 4 years and it really has been pampered covering only 8,000 milrs approx in that time with loads of tlc. The market in the UK is very slow and it would really frustate me to sell it for little money. I have committed to come over for four years, without any unmitigated disasters off course, so seling it over there would be a possible, although don't think I would find another. I do have a BMW M635CSi which is patially restored and I have to much money and time invested in to sell at this stage (I would not get very much in relative terms) so I either complete it and bring it or complete it and sell it here! The M635CSi does have air con unlike the 944 so maybe thats the desicion made..........

Another problem with bringing it here with a strong view of selling it is that UK cars are not viewed too highly over here due to rust issues, but I guess that could be discussed with the potential purchaser. Alternatively you could bring it out and enjoy it for 4 years and then ship it back with you if/when you leave. Just being able to enjoy your car and not have to purchase another, or buy a cheapish daily driver out here. Or leave it in the UK for when you get back?? I'd consider bringing it and enjoying it on our wide open spaces....hint NOT Sydney...but not too far outside of...[:)]

A really, really good S2 is going to be somewhere between £4k and £7k over here just now so it all depends if you think you can sell it for more than $8.5k AUS to $15k AUS when you are over there.

Gauging by Aus 'Auto Trader' and there own Porsche Club it seems extremely difficult to locate an S2 never mind find one for reasonable money. I would say mine is worth £4,500....based on an afternoon surfing the net I think it would be worth A$20,000. Can't sell it over there for two years so who knows by then....after all it's not hydrogen powered!

The reality is I will probably try & sell here before moving. More cash for house deposits etc.........It's breaking my heart!

Well there is really not much of a market down here for front engined Porsches, but I would feel confidant that you'd get more than $15K au for your car if it's in good nick. It's all timing. They're only worth as much as someone is prepared to pay after all. Of course you'd have to offset your freight costs too. It's a tricky one for sure. Good luck.
