944 in the rain ?

Hi there,

Im on the edge of getting a 944 but I-m also moving house, were the new one doesnt have a covered car park, but has an outside allocated car space ( that means "al fresco" ).

So many warnings when seeing a 944 about rot, im sure that keeping a 944 outside ( not having a covered place ) may not be good, or im wrong? Ie, as long they dont have rot to begin with its ok or its a complete nono even it they dont have it ?

I live in London btw, and now that winter is starting, im pondering ( didnt get the 944 yet, for this reason I might go for a Volvo C70 T5 or something )

I keep mine outside all the time as like you I have no garage. I do make sure it has a good quality wax on, and also have replaced a couple of the seals to make sure its water tight.

I have however for good or bad just ordered a cover to keep it a bit more snug in the winter...

 
Mine's outside all the time, I use a cover when it's sunny, to avoid the glorious Guards Red paintwork - is there any other colour? [;)] - fading to a dusky pink. I take the cover off when it's windy, as there is definately a bit of rubbing on the corners.

If a car's rotting, it will be from the inside out. If there's trapped water or lovely salty mud, then this will not be stopped by keeping the car under cover. I'd worry more about the residents of London than the elements...[:mad:]

Where are you in London? The region is very active, with a meet at the Ace Cafe, North Circular, this Monday evening. It normally drags a few 944 owners out, so feel free to come and introduce yourself!




 
944s are better built than most others from the same period & if used regularly will suffer no worse than you would expect from any car kept outside.
Putting a wet car in a garage can be worse than leaving it outside where there is a breeze to help dry it off.
 
One of mine is kept permanently outside without a problem. Just keep it regularly waxed for the bits you can see and ensure the arches and sills are cleaned from mud and salt whenever you wash the car.

It is starting to be seen as a trend that those with sill problems are generally S2s or Turbos that catch the crud on the plastic trim under the sill. Lux and S models don't have this trim and seem to suffer less.
 
Paul is right about the rusty sills on the S2 and turbo. I have mine repaired at a costy £600. Anyway, what is happening at the Ace Cefe this coming monday? Porsche club gathering?

It is the London Region meeting. Unfortunately it is also German Car night, so you have to put up with a few BMW's, but it is moving to a Porsche only night in January - and the only way it will be, and will stay, a Porsche only night is if people turn up in Porsches.[>:]

Back to the thread - a 944 is no worse than any other car if left outside and better than a great number half its age. They are far happier used regularly than left in a garrage for weeks on end and will reward you more.

The only real issue is with regard to damp rear foot wells and this can be avoided with some care and attention.
