944 Lowering

I've just fitted new strut inserts to the front & AVO adjustable rear dampers to my '83 944. I've also pushed the rear wheels out by 15mm each with proper bolt on spacers. Now i'd like to lower the car by 15-20mm. I know a number of manufacturers offer 30mm lowered front springs but thats a little too far in my opinion bearing in mind i believe the range of adjustment on the rear torsion bar is in the order of 15-18mm without re-indexing. I actually bought a pair of AVO 30mm lowered springs & changed my mind about fitting them after seeing a few pics of other cars. Perfect for the track but just a wee bit too dumped & Essex for me! I'm going for subtle here not would be track day weapon.

Do you know of anyone that manufactures a lowered spring of 15-20mm?

Would those from an S2 or Turbo work/fit & achieve the desired effect?

Has anyone tried spring compressors? Seems an agricultural solution to me!

Am i likely to have any fouling issues on the rear arches as my car has the factory optional 16" Fuchs with 205 tyres? It's going to be tight but someone out there may have some first hand experience.

Any other issues i need to think about, balljoints etc?

Cheers
Si

Your original springs have probably sagged more than you realise so -30mm isn't going to be 30mm lower than your current ride height.

I fitted -30mm's to Beaky and was somewhat disappointed how little difference it seemed to make visually. - no doubt due to previous sag as noted above.

As Mik says the 968 CS springs are a 20mm drop, but nether they nor any S2 or Turbo springs will fit your car. I once fitted CS springs to an S2 and I was entirely underwhelmed by the result whereas the "-35mm" ones my Turbo used to have looked about right to me.

Bert @ Berlyn does front springs with a 25mm drop, think they might be the fellas for me. Bert added in his e-mail 'I also sell a kit to convert standard struts to adjustable spring platforms as on the M030 turbo type, you would have to source springs but there are standard springs available from the likes of Demon Tweeks. I had these kits made for the racing boys and still have a few left'

Am i going to be able to get the rear of the car low enough without re-indexing or am i going to end up with the hot rod look? It's a little that way anyway without either the slotted or turbo valance under the back end.

Stuff the karting, I feel a trip to the Ring coming on!

It depends how your car left the factory how much rear drop you will get on the eccentrics. Theoretically there is 40mm or so to be had, but you'd need the car to be set at maximum height just now to realise that. Porsche used the eccentrics to fine-tune the ride height as I understand it so all cars are slightly different.

Thanks for your replies. Trial & error session coming right up. I'll try to post some before & after pics for the interested.

Si.
