Does anybody know if the head can be removed from the car with the exhaust manifold attached. I understand it can be done but was wondering if you have to remove the cylinder head studs to allow some sideways movement. I would be grateful for advice from anyone who has done this.

944 Lux cylinder head removal question

You can certainly do it on the turbo without removing the studs , in fact its easier than trying to wiggle the manifolds in/out.
Not sure about the lux as the exhaust is a different shape but theres one way to find out..
I take it you mean the exhaust flange studs. On my lux I just undid the nuts and slid the manifold out I left the studs in place.
If you mean the main cylinder head studs, I would leave them well alone.

would be a lot easier with the mannifold off.Why can't you remove the manifold?
I have read it saves quite a bit of time if you lift the head off with the manifold attached and remove it on the bench where its easier to access the nuts.

It was the cylinder head studs that I was meaning, I suppose I didn't really make the question clear, can you lift the head off with the manifold attached without removing these studs. I was thinking because the head is at an angle the exhaust manifold might foul on the inner wing as you lift the head over the studs. I take it the main cylinder head studs can be reused ?

Do not remove the head studs. In case thats not clear, DO NOT REMOVE THE HEAD STUDS. They will be incredibly tight in the block, requiring lots of heat, sweat and swearing. Plus you need to measure them before removal as they do not bottom out in the threads.

I have removed the studs on my 968 block to fit shorter studs for the the 8v head and it was not an easy task, I'm not even sure you could do it with the head fitted.
As I said you can lift the head on the turbo with the manifold in place (and its easier), I didn't think of trying on the lux so not sure either way. Might as well try it as worse case you have to remove the manifold anyway.

I haven't been that close to the exhaust side of the '44, but I know that when I had the exhaust of the '24S I remember thinking "that would be an easy way to do it if I ever had to remove the head.
In that it should just lift away once the heater rails are removed, could be wrong but it looked that way
