944 Lux Oil Consumption

Hi, been for a good run in my 1986 944 Lux today, checked the oil before and after out of curiosity as she tends to smell a bit strong when I open her up and there are sometimes the signs of small black deposits on the rear bumper/skirt when I wash her.
Turns out over 170 miles of which most was driven hard she has used 1/2 a litre of oil (as I understand it the two marks on the dipstick indicate a whole litre I think) she has 145,000 miles on her now should i be overly concerned do you think[&:]

On the face of it that sounds quite a lot, but, if this is the first longer, hard driven distance that the car has had for a while then it sounds quite normal. If I only use mine for the short trip to work and back then it appears to use no oil. If I then take it for a longer run on a weekend the oil level can suddenly drop on the dipstick. I think it has to do with impurities and vapour that mix with the oil giving the impression of zero usage, that are then burned off when the car gets fully up to temperature. The half litre may therefore have disappeared over a much higher mileage.

I originally took a measure of the oil on the dipstick yesterday morning when cold and all the oil is in the sump, I've done the same this morning and if anything it appears to have used about a quarter of a litre at the most so I am less concerned for now.

Cheers Neil

That's a bit better Nick [:)]

I have noticed you can get a very large difference on the dipstick when taking a reading from absolute stone cold and when it's still pretty hot

Same as mine Nick, I use very little oil considering the age and mileage of the car(111000)

I've noticed that as well - much more difference than on most other cars.

Anyone any idea why? Let's be honest, there's nto *that* much engine for the oil to remain in, so why it should take so long to trickle back to the sump is beyond me.

Oli.
