944 Lux Seeks Attention lol

Hey all,

Sorry, not been about for a while. Hope everyones good. :)

Quick question to the techies out there...

Ok, quick summarize first! - Some of you might remember me making a post a while back about my 944 Lux started to 'whistle' like a turbo (no, i wasn't under the influence at the time lol) which was kinda disturbing. Turns out that the last trip i made in her resulted in the cabin filling up with blue smoke, the temp gauge going well over the red (never a good sign) and all the water ran out. After stopping a hundred times to cool the engine down just to get the car home, it was left on the driveway as i sulked (lots and lots).

Its been sat on the driveway a while now (impulse buy, i went out and bought a MGF as a plaything, summers here and i wanted something topless), so the Porsche hasnt had much attention recently. I finally got round to taking a look today (and it started first time on the button), however theres a very strange noise coming from what i think is the top, or front of then engine, kinda sounds like theres no oil (everythings sounds dry), but there's oil in the engine and the waters been refilled.

So here is the dilemma (everyone knows im not a mechanic wotsoever, filling up the water and oil was an achievement to me :p), is the noise because the oil has drained out of the top because its been sat there so long not doing anything (if anyones laughing, i apologise at my ignorance) OR is it time to call in the mechanics?

I really dont want to run the engine unless i really need too.

Cheers in advance for your advice!

Hmm, maybe an oil starvation issue? I think theres an oil pickup tube that can crack or even break away, that might explain the high temps. Blue smoke is oil leaking/burning though and in the cabin it'd have to come through the window or the vents...
How long did yo run it for? If its been sat a while it can sounded tappety, but it should only last a few minutes max.
What sort of noise is it exactly?
Someone who actually knows what they're talking about [:D] should be a long shortly to help you out.

Hey alexw, thanks for the reply.

I'm not really sure what happened, the blue smoke came through the air vents as the windows were closed at the time (it was raining if i remember rightly). It just filled up the cabin instantly, then i noticed the car had overheated. The noise sounds kinda like a grinding noise, im wondering if the water pump has failed hence thats whats making the noise now?

I ran the car for about 10 mins, i was trying to see if it was going to over heat again. The engine got quieter as it warmed up (which was a relief), but the 'grinding' noise didnt (stayed at same volume).

OK... when an engine overheats the big metal bits frequently fair ok... when it cools down, unless it is really, really hot, then they'll go back as they are. If it over heats a little bit, i.e, not enough to do serious damage, but enough that you haven't "got away with it", what happens is that all the little oil seals either melt, embrittle, or give up the ghost in some other way. The metal bits may well have a melting point of 600+ C, oil seals are far, far less than that... I have 200C in mind as typical - easily achieved once there is no cooling water.

So... your engine will run, but everywhere there once was an oil seal, there may well now be a gap that the oil can escape through, onto hot bits of engine, and burn away. In clouds of blue smoke!

There is a high chance that at the extremities of some of the oil-ways you will be suffering from reduced oil pressure as a result, and this could cause all sorts of rattles, and eventually, early failure.

Sorry, IMHO, there isn't a simple easy fix.
