Hello,

Im in the process of having my 944 restored and I've had the wheels refurbished and about to put new tyres on but what size??
looking through the drivers manual there's 2 different sizes 195/65/R15 or 215/60/R15 any advice and what brand of tyre I should buy?

Thanks Ben

I'm afraid your going to have problems finding tyres now for original 15" 944 wheels, Longstone Tyres supply major brand tyres in classic sizes but they are a good deal more expensive than you can imagine, around £250 per tyre but they have a selection including Pirelli and Michelin in those sizes.

Your other options are some "ditch finder" unknown brands that crop up on blackcircles and the like or perhaps the better option is to find some larger wheels in the correct offset for your car.

Hi,
Currently you've still got a fair amount of choice and decent brands and compounds...

Is the car a Daily driver / Show car - garage queen / or a bit of both ?
Unless it's for concourse shows and you simple must have the original 1980'#s tread patterns (The longstone tyres route) you have the following options:

Change the size slightly (You'll notice no difference driving or on the speedo whatsoever) from the 215/60/15 to a 205/65/15 (Only 1% diameter difference)
or the narrower section width size 195/65/15

The 205/65/15 size will sit nice on the 7" Wide rims (All 4) give more compliance and comfort compared to the 195/65 width tyre

You've got a BIG choice of all the major manufacturers in this Size (Michelin / Pirelli / Continental / Goodyear / Dunlop / Bridgestone / Uniroyal / Avon)
Ranging from approx £75 to £110 inc vat per tyre..

Summer & Winter Tyres or even the brilliant Michelin Cross Climate + is avaulable in this size
(A one tyre tread & compound that does all conditions really well Dry /wet / Snow) Not to be confused with a sole Winter tyre which is poor in the dry and wet)

Toyo Proxes or Avon ZR7 are good too, in the sizes you need [;)]
205.65 x15 are nicer ride and feel more capable.

Make sure whoever's doing the paintwork, that they do NOT paint the back on the hub (The face that mounts to your wheel hub) this is a common
thing that most outfits seem to do (Especially Industrial powder coaters) and if it's not clean and bare metal it WILL cause balancing & Vibration issues and potentially
also could come loose when it heats up and the paint thickness compresses...

Apologies - when I looked I used the recommended tyre size from the owners manual which turned up not many results.

I'd go with the 205/65 as suggested if I was you.

The Continental All Season Contact are good also if available in that size - been running them on my X3 for a year and half and they have amazing grip in the wet and not to shabby in the snow we've had today.

Hello,

Thanks for the info!
The car is at Retro Restorer in Banbury, Nash the owner lives and breathes these cars it’s in great hands.

Thanks Ben

Ooh, ah. Erm.

Staying in line with forum guidelines I would make sure you check everything that’s been done and take someone along who really knows these cars To make sure the work has been done to the expected and agreed standards.

It would be fair to say that reports have been "Mixed” especially with regards to bodywork.

Yes I would make sure you do your research first - google should turn up the relevant material you require.

I was also about to send my car there and changed my mind [8|]

Ooooof that's triggered a few negatives, it's hard for any company to rid any historic issues they may have had in the past...Unless it cecomes the norm
then it's hard to stay open.
How's the job going so far, are you happy or ?

Well I have to say i have been checking on the car through out the process of the car being painted and I can’t fault Nash at Retro Restorer they have been lovely to deal with!
im very picky with my cars and I have been through this process before with my 964 that was painted by a different company.
Everyone will have an opinion on where to get your car resprayed there’s good and bad and you won’t find two people that will say the same company to go to!

Remember you are only as good as your last job!!

I will post pictures when I’m reunited with the car.
