944 M030 Koni Front Shock refurb?

I think my front offside shock needs some attention, it has developed a knock/creak under braking.

I've read that it's possible to send these to Koni to have them rebuilt?

Having had a look online, this is what I found, but it says "for Sachs struts" only. This has me confused!

My shocks are the yellow adjustable
Koni versions on my '88 M030 944 Turbo.

Has anyone had theirs rebuilt?

Thanks

What you are looking at are new Koni "inserts" which are installed in original Sachs struts. You cut the tops off the originally sealed Sachs struts at a specific length, remove the operating bits, drill a hole in the bottom of the tube and bolt in the replacement insert. The rears are new replacement (but adjustable) shocks.

What you want is to rebuild your original Koni stuts. AFAIK Koni does not offer a kit for owners to rebuild their own struts - I believe this is a "factory" service they provide. So I think you remove your struts, package them up and send them to Koni for rebuilding. I understand they can rebuild the rears also. Never done it myself but I would guess if you contact customer service they can tell you how to go about it.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I'd be happy to send mine to Koni and have them rebuilt, that's what I went to the website for and the Sachs note confused me.

Ill try and find a phone number for Koni and call them tomorrow.

Curious as to whether any members have had this done.

I know a couple of 968 owners that have had them rebuilt, I will try and get the place they sent to for you

Hi

I have 'koni' inserts, I fitted these myself, the kit comes with full instructions....unlike other brands Koni inserts don't need welding. I'm not sure that they fit the later cars, mine's an '86' with early offset which I believe is the last model year for these inserts? I stand to be corrected if I have this wrong....

cheers

Pete

edit: I forgot to say, early offset is Sachs

Thanks, Waylander! Hope you're well? I remember your words of wisdom from my 968uk Forum days when I had the Iris Blue Sport!

My car is the 88 model, last of the Turbos before the bridge spoiler model, so not sure if that makes it early or late offset, but the shocks are original and they're the yellow Koni adjustables.

A place down in Lincoln used to do them, possibly the same place as previously mentioned, when I bought my car back after 4 years the owner had just put brand new fronts on, I asked where the old ones were, up at the garage that had fitted them, shot up there to retrieve them with a view to rebuild "Sorry pal the skip was collected today" Aaarghhhh !

Just to update the thread with the outcome.

After a bit of head scratching, it was established that in fact it wasnt the shocks at all, it was a missing heat shield on one side and the other not fastened properly that was the source of the problem.

The heat from the engine was causing the bush at the back of the suspension arms to heat up and creak/crack when under pressure!

Thankfully the problem is now resolved!
