944 Mk1 1985

Good afternoon
I am brand new to this type of thing, I have just purchased a 944 Mk1 barn find.
Does anyone know how to open the bonnet despite the release cable having snapped.
Many thanks
Andrew

Has the cable really snapped, or is it just the plastic sleeve the end of the outer cable goes into? Quite a common problem, and less and £10 for a new one from Porsche. If that is the problem, take the handle off and use it to pull the inner cable through the outer. I also have a car on which the cable doesn't quite release the catch... what I find with that is pulling the handle back in the footwell, and giving the bonnet a thump with the ball on my hand on the only corner of it I can reach (ok, more of a tap than a thump) is enough to jiggle it free.

PS, if it is the cable, be very careful of the routing... I had the cable not quite correctly routed on one car, and when I put the lights up the light crank caught the bonnet release cable, and pulled it through the bulkhead, ripping just about all of the wires out of the back of the fusebox in the process... It took me days to sort out that mess!

Many thanks for your response.
There is no cable or handle visible in the footwell, I will investigate further.
Regards
Andrew

Ok, excuse me asking the obvious, but you are looking in the passenger footwell not the drivers side, assuming it is a RH drive car? A left over from being designed as a lhd car I am afraid!

Lol, yes I am looking in the passenger footwell of a RHD car. I've removed the carpet, there is a large metal plate that looks like it may have something attached to it, I will check tomorrow.

I have just checked, pulled the carpet back to expose the mounting for the bonnet release, there is nothing there no cable to pull.

Hi, yes I know I have removed the carpet from the side wall to expose the mounting, but there is no cable and the lever is missing.

I think your only option is going to be to get the front of the car up in the air and reach up to the mechanism from underneath. You will need to remove the engine undertray if fitted and then reach up between the front of the engine and the radiator fans to reach the latch mechanism. If it has snapped a cable then it's likely to be stiff so you might need to lever with something. You need to lever towards the passenger side of the car as that is the direction the cable pulls from.

Also try getting someone to push down on the front of the bonnet at the same time to take some of the spring tension off. With a combination of lever wiggling and bonnet jiggling it will hopefully pop free.

What he said unfortunately... You are in Enfield? not a million miles away from me when at work in Borehamwood - you are welcome to have a look at my car and see roughly where it should be, and where the cable should run so you get an idea of what you are up against if you think it might help.

Tref.

Many thanks for all the response, it has been suggested that I jack it up remove the under tray as.
Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on.
Andrew
