944 Models

Hi,
Im trying to get insurance quotes for a 944 as I'm thinking about buying one but I have a small issue. I have had a good quote through Lancaster, but hey had a number of model options available, The one I picked was '944 Coupe 2 door manual petrol 2479cc 1980-1991', this gave me the good quote, however when I repeated the quote with the model '944 Lux 2 door manual petrol 2479cc 1980-1991' I got a price about 3 times as much because the policy I had been offered on the coupe model wasn't available for the Lux.

I have been looking at a few cars and it seems to me that most of them are Lux models, so I just wanted to check if the coupe wasn't just another description of the Lux model and the cheap policy would be valid, or is there a difference, and if so is there an easy way to tell?
Cheers

Tim

Same car! [&:]

I can understand if they add a small amount for the very last cars, as they had a 2.7 engine and a little extra power, but hardly different in the scheme of things!

Thats what I thought, I think its just different policies they have use different descriptions but I didnt want to insure it as the wrong model.
Cheers

Tim

Enter the registration number of your intended car into the DVLA website and it should tell you what it's registered as. If it is reg'd as a Lux then I think you'll be out of luck arguing with the insurance company (even though they are the exact same car [])

All seems a bit strange to me 1980-1991 lux model is wrong as the 944 didnt get released till 1982 and there was'nt a 1991 lux model avalible (stopped at 89 i think ??)

Actually, the Lux and coupe wouldn't really be the same. The Lux is an unofficial (or at best UK only) concatenation of "Luxury Pack", and all cars that came to the UK new were what we know as a Lux as they all had the luxury pack specified. Any non-Lux would be an import, which is usually an excuse for the insurers to bump up the price. We're talking stuff like electric windows and sunroof when we say luxury pack.

In terms of years the 944 was originally only available as a 2.5 coupe and only from 1982 as has been said above. The first extra model was the Turbo in 1986. The S is also 2.5 but with a 16v head and was an '87 & '88 model only. Assuming we're talking UK cars until '89 then there were only 2 models to concern yourself with, and the number of valves is the obvious difference. Every 944 to this date was a coupe.

In '89 the Lux got a 2.7 engine (actually that might have been '88 - someone will correct me if it was), the S2 replaced the S (with a 3.0) engine, the Turbo got more power, and the first non-coupe 944 was released in the shape of the S2 cabriolet.

'89 was the last year of the Lux, but the S2 and Turbo carried on to '91 (some are '92 or even '93 registered). The Turbo cabriolet was the last model launched (I think) in late '91 for the '92 model year as a last hurrah.

Basically what that means in effect is what you have been told above. If you're sticking to a 2.5 then you're looking at a coupe, and unless it is clearly designated as an S, S2 or Turbo, or it's an import, it is a Lux. The interesting point in all of this is that Lancaster presumably have a number of customers paying the non-Lux rate for a Lux.

Out of curiosity I've just checked the V5C on my 1988 and the model is designated 944 with no mention of Lux. I think Lancaster would find it difficult to penalise anyone who had supplied the information exactly as it appears on the log book! (Not that it affects me - I'm with Heritage!!)
