last year i had to have the engine totally re-build.

now its failed its MOT and its got to have just about everything else sorted..[][][] brakes, steering, tyres +++

strange thing is i still love it.. just as well its cost me more than all my other cars put togeather [&o]

Oh dear Helen. I think you've been very unlucky!! I had a stack of various normal maintenance items to rectify for the first MOT that I put the car through. All MOT's since have passed first time. I think you've just been unlicky that these jobs have fallen within your ownership of the car. I can't think of any reason why a 944 should be any more expensive or cheaper to run over another similar aged and mileage Porsche. In fact i've recently calculated that if I take out the non-essential spend on my car, like mods, it's almost been as cheap to run as my previous Golf! But there seems to be a minimum bill of £150 for every visit to the garage no matter for what purpose.

Hi Helen, sorry to hear the bad news. You'll have to get Larry to put those polishing cloths away, (anyway, it's not good for him, he'll get 'tennis elbow', or what ever its called) and get the spanners out!![:D][:D]

larry and spanners ................eeek!! anough to give me nightmares.

his a chartered mechanical engineer, so knows nothing about engines [;)][:D]

Would be nice!!

I'm of the opinion that anything under £1K is a cheap visit [].

Sorry to hear your news Helen. At least you still love the car; it's when you start regretting the expenditure that it becomes uncomfortable.

Worst still is when you spend a small fortune on a car and finally get sick of it over a small thing. You then sell the car and the new owner gets years of reliable, and cheap, use following your investment. I know this feeling so well as generally an end of things that need doing is a short precursor to getting bored and wanting something else.......did I mention that I went around the Aston Martin factory this morning [8D][8D][8D][8D].

money i had put to one side for a 356 or a mint 914 has now all been spent on the 944 so its just as well i still love the car as looks like i will be the proud owner of it for quite a while. i couldn't afford to sell it as its not worth nearly as much as i have spent on it.

i was planning to have some of the paintwork done but that will have to wait for a bit now [&o]

Joys of motoring Helen, if we didn't have to spend money on them we probably wouldn't appreciate them as much.
The 944 is still one of the best Porsches ever to have been produced. I still get pleasure driving mine even after twelve years of ownership.
Cheers,

Just for the record I would like to clarify that I have seen some big bills for my car, what I meant was that even if you take the car in for a relatively simple job that would have cost around £60 on previous cars the bill always ends up being at least £150. I didn't want anyone to get the impression i've had a particularly easy or unusually cheap time with my car!! I know that i've got a cylinder head gasket to replace at some stage in the not too distant future along with all those inevitable 'While you've got the head off.....' jobs!

But I still maintain that I'm sure if I were to work out the essential maintentance costs on a £/mile basis I would be very surprised if the car was a significant amount more to run that previous hot hatches i've owned.

I saw one big bill for my car (a £3.5k one for a new turbo, completely new brakes, alarm, full service and a few other bits and bobs) when I bought the car. Since then I've done eerything myself. Why should I pay garage labour prices when I have a garage full of tools and enough skills to do it?

I agree totally, when I lived with the old cheeses I had access to a large double garage, a huge collection of tools a decent stereo and a gas fire and spent many an hour working on my first car, a MK111 Escort that was so knackered I had to work on it every weekend in order to ensure it lasted the coming week. Given those conditions there are not many jobs I wouldn't tackle - in fact it makes DIY car mechanics a pleasure. Unfortunately i've only got a single garage and a jack that wont even fit under the car! Needless to say i've lost my appetite for tackling jobs apart from the most simple ones!

i'm afraid to admit i haven't got a clue about engines. Larry hasn't got the time. so i have to rely on garages to fix my cars for me.
may cost me more but, it gets the job done and keeps the car where it should be.....on the road, not sitting in my garage waiting for Larry to fix something.

I used to do all my own work, including changing a short engine on a Dolomite Sprint, now I do next to nothing.

I think it was the the cold wet day when I was trying to fit gas Spax on the Dolly and I stood up, with the shock absorber in my hand and thought...'I am NOT enjoying this'.

I do the odd tiny thing, which doesn't affect the way the car runs, but otherwise I trust the 'experts'.

I concur about less than a grand you should think yourself lucky, although, my last service was just over and I manged to get JZ to take a couple of quid off to make it just under [:)]

just collected the 944 from Zentrum. and feeling a little poorer for it. but have to admit it does sound/feel/drive superbly now [8D]

now what else can go wrong with it ? [&o] its almost a new car now [:)]

did my best to keep up with the slant nose on the way home [8D] unfortunatly the traffic lights were against me else.......................[;)][:D]
