944 New Owner

Hi Just put 1000 miles ( now 202,000 miles) onto my recently purchased 944 Lux and I have a couple of queries if anyone has any ideas.
Firstly when I have been driving and come to a halt, like traffic lights or junction , the revs take ages to die don. The return spring looks puny and stretched and I wondered if that is the only think controlling idling speed.
Secondly, when I first bought the car I noticed the temp gauge was always showing cool/warm and the top of the rad never got hot. I took it for a days outing a few weeks ago and everything returned to 'normal' in that hot water was circulating and the gauge was mid way up.
Having parked it up for 3/4 weeks its now gone back to its cool phase again. is this an airlock or thermostat or something else?

Engine cooling issue could be thermostat - not sure if the thermostats fails cool or hot, I guess failing cool is the safest so i'm sure Porsche designed it that way. Having said that the gauges can be a bit dodgy on these cars anyway and I don't think it is an uncommon trait for the temp gauge to read cooler than the 9 0'clock position. A good test would be to maybe cover up the rad with a piece of cardboard and take the car for a bit of a drive to see if the temp gauge gets hotter and listen out for the fan kicking in, then stop and remove the cardboard and see how long it takes for the temp to drop. It should react quickly as I found out on one motorway stretch when I collected a piece of cardboard on the road and it didn't take long for it to register on the temp gauge so I stopped, removed it and it very quickly cooled back down again.

Your idle thing could be the throttle position switch. This is a small microswitch that clicks when you remove your foot off the throttle. It is not uncommon for these things to fail now the cars are getting on in years and mileage. It could also be a dirty Idle Stabalisation Valve, but if it was this i'd expect youd be having general idling issues all the time and not just as you approach the junction and dump the clutch.

I'd agree with Scott - he's usually very good!
I would just say if its an square dash the temp gauge should go about vertical when the fan cuts in, however mine has never been got there!
It could be an airlock - they are notoriously difficult to bleed - valve is on the top of elbow on the top front of the engine.
