944 (or possibly 924!) questions

Hi,

I'm planning to replace my current car with a 944. Purchase wise I think I've got a reasonably good budget at around 6k, but I'm worried insurance may be prohibitive because I'm 23 and thanks to having been on kit car insurance previously I have no official NCB. I don't mind paying a reasonable ammount, but potentially it looks like being half the cost of the car ......every year! (which I can barely afford, let alone justify) I haven't dug too deeply yet and I'm hoping club discounts and classic insurance can bring this down to something much more reasonable. What do people think?

The second thing is I haven't decided definately on a 944. I prefer the looks over the 924 (and I can't quite get over that appearing in top gears "crap cars" book!!) but I don't really know a lot about either, so it'd be interesting to hear a comparsion. Furthermore, assuming I do go for a 944, can someone explain the differences between the various incarnations (2.5, 3.0, S, S2, Lux, varying ages....)

Many thanks!

Welcome to the forum, search is your friend (top centre of page) as the differences / merits have been discussed frequently.
Ref insurance I guess phoning around or trying websites will be the way to go, Tesco's might be worth a try I know some of the younger owners get a good deal through them. However insurance seems to defy all logic and it depends where you live, work etc multiplied by a random number between 1 and 1000 and divide by you age.

insurance under a classic policy is pretty cheap (I only pay £250 per year) but the policy normally has a mileage limit of 5,000 miles per year and it needs to be a second car

Don't buy a modified car as, if you can actually get anyone to quote you insurance, it will be spectacular.

Limited mileage insurance is much cheaper, it will go up to 7,500 miles, but it is surprising how quickly you can use up your allocation with a car you enjoy driving and a associated busy social calender.

I know, sadly the reason I'm buying something with 4 seats and a roof is to avoid having to get another car. Likewise, limited mileage isn't much use for me unless I can get handy with an electric drill (err, just joking)

I'm hoping I can get unlimited mileage only-car classic insurance .......haven't spoken to them yet, but Footman James currently give me those terms on kit car insurance, so hopefully it could be transferred (albeit at a stratospheric premium) to classic insurance.

One interesting point, is I get the impression most 944s I've seen on autotrader etc are rather optimistically priced. There it seems you have to be looking 5k+ for a half decent one, but I get the impression they go for rather cheaper than that? Still doesn't escape however the fact that whatever I buy, at my age the insurance is going to be a huge part of the cost.

There is a wide range in cost because there is a wide range in condition. Sometimes this means a good one will be underpriced and a bad one overpriced. There are usually a few in the pistonhead classifieds, and if you join the club there is usually a range in the back of the club mag.

There is always this one,

which other than exaggerated claims for beating turbos (now edited?) looks like a bargain.

The only problem with that one is that it's been modified, so insurance for a young whipper snapper will be even higher.

I always knew there had to be an advantage to being an old git. £300 for unlimited mileage in my 944S [:)]

Have you considered the possibility of buying two cars? A modest 944 lux maybe for less than half your budget, the cheapest model to insure, and could be used on a limited mileage policy. Plus, for the rest of your budget something less exotic as a daily driver. I frequently run two or more cars, as do several of us, the other perk is that you never worry about the daily car not starting in the morning, its the perfect excuse to take the Porsche!
