944 overfueling

Hi All

I have finally got myself a 944 1989 2.7 and already I could do with some peoples help

The car is overfueling can smell it on tick over at the back really strong and theres hesitation on idle and when on half throttle its fitted with a aftermarket air filter which i dont think is helping and also looking on the net I think it has the wrong type of fuel rail its the one where both the regulator and damper are at the top of the engine either side of the rail ( see below ) plus the vacuum lines on both go into one then go onto the throttle body part which there is also another hose with just a screw in

Am i right in saying there should be one straight to the regulator and the other one to the damper ?

Please go easy I am new to this Forum and car

Hi Ben and welcome,

You are correct that a 2.7 should have the later type fuel rail but only in as much as the fuel lines dont reach far enough for the early type, however that has been addressed on your car so no problem there.

The vacuum lines are ok like that providing the other end of the line goes into the throttle body.

2.7s can have 2.5 Bar (early) or 3.0 Bar (late) FPRs depending on when they were made, with different ECU's to match.

I would suspect you have a 2.5B one but check the part no to be sure.

I would also say it could well be the FPR at fault here - pull the vac line and smell for petrol, if so FPR is u/s, if not it may still be, just not that bad yet. (I had it on my 2.7!)

Could also be injector(s) stuck

Or possibly a 3.0B FPR with "2.5B" ECU

I will get the ecu number when I am back from work and see if its a 3bar one as my fpr is just like the pic so assume its a 2.5bar but would less bar cause it to over fuel ?

I took the vac pipe off last night and got a strong smell of petrol so if it is the fpr shall I go 2.5bar or 3bar if its a 3bar ecu as the rail may not cope ?

Ok now I am lost looked underneath the glovebox and can't see the ECU anywhere look under the steering wheel and just the ABS ECU help ???

And looking at the engine I think it's a 2.5 from 1983 as the a 83 mark by the dizzy cap

Look under the carpet in the passenger footwell. There will be a wooden panel and the ECU is under there.
 
Ok just look up the ECU number and it's the 2.7 one just need to work out now if it's a 2.5 or 2.7 engine and if its a 2.5bar/3bar ECU/FPR why is nothing ever easy 😃

 
If there is fuel in the vac line FPR is u/s. The vacumn sucks the fuel through the FPR and into the inlet. Mine put a inch of petrol in the airbox......
What colour are the injector tops green - 3bar black - 2.5bar.
Rail will be fine although I would keep a close eye on the joints where the pipes attach for the damper and FPR.
I may have a 2.7 one in the garage.

Does anybody know if this ECU 944.618.121.06 is a 3bar or 2.5bar or early/late 2.7 ECU

Are you sure it's an 89 2.7? The heater inlet looks like the early type and is that the battery on the top left of the picture? Later cars had the battery in the boot.

 
Well spotted Keith!
It certainly looks like a pre 85 car, so unless its had its engine swapped it would be a 2.5.
There shouldn't be any fuel smell from the vac lines, take the J boot off and check the throttle body for fuel.
Check the colour of the injectors.
 
Sorry guys should of said that's just a pic I got of the net to show the rail the battery etc are in the boot

The injectors are black so 2.5bar just need to find out what the ecu is now

Ok people upon looking more into this the ECU is a 2.7 1989 which the car is but the engine I found out today is a 2.5 from 1984 so what's the best solution to sort this do I need to swap the ECU and the air flow meter which is also a 1989 2.7 model and the fuel reg is from the 2.5 1984 or is the some way of using the existing ECU say with a chip etc... Plus is this ECU a 2.5 or 3 bar
