hi,

just picked up an '86 944 with a few issues .. wheel bearings, brakes, tyres, steering column..


wheel bearings are no worries.
steering column is a pain, but ive had them re-engineered on 924's before now, so shouldnt pose a problem

brakes though .. all 4 discs are shot, is it worth "upgrading" to "turbo" brakes ? or something ? and if so is this just discs ? or will i need calipers as well ?

also what is the correct size tyres for the 15x7"(?) cookie cutters ?

Different caliper mounts for Turbo brakes (and 2 different mounts for them depending on year) so not a straigt bolt-on. There's a thread running just now about WIlwood upgrades for Luxes.

What's up with the steering column? An '86 944 will not necessarily be the same as a 924.

ok, scratch the brake upgrade for now.. too much involvment and ££ just standard discs for me :)

both steering column UJ's are shot, so need replacing.. i know the shaft is different to the 924, but replacing the UJ's is the same job once its off the car.

have some tyre's on order for fitting tomorrow, cant remember the size, but i trust the guys at my local place.. (all 4 of the fitted tyres were different brands AND sizes, hence the confusion on what should be on there)

 
[:)] cheers for that .. just noticed the price drop @ porscheshop.co.uk .. was over £200 last year when i needed a 924 one doing, hence getting an independant engineer to carry out the work.. cost ~£60 iirc.. reckon i'll just buy one this time round eh ? [;)]

rear wheel bearings ? as much of a faff to do at home as the manual suggests ?


 
Always try Bert, his details are in the faqs, and Exeter Porsche Centre for spares as well.

It's surprising how often parts are cheapest at a Porsche Centre, as well as the obvious fact that they'll be the proper quality. Porsche are one of the better companies at continuing to support the older models through parts, manuals etc.

Or, there's always someone on e-bay who'll sell you a part made from pipe-cleaners in a Chinese sweatshop for slightly more money, if you prefer! [&o]
 
I've just had the wheel bearings replaced on the back of mine (ok it was a garage job, im not very techie with cars). The garage i used hadn't changed Porsche wheel bearings before but they were very quick with car and i had it back within a few hours.

Apparantly it helped that the old bearings just fell out when they took the wheels off! [:D]

well, maybe ... they have collapsed so completely that there's about 20 degree's of play in each rear wheel ..

preliminary inspection reveals loose castle nuts, bent nails as split pins, and shrapnel that used to be bearings packed with coppaslip .. why do people do this to cars ! my last 924 was the same.. everything that moved was packed full of coppaslip.. not much of it moved as intended for very long. What i dont get.. is real grease is cheaper .. so why do it ?

Agreed, it doesn't make any sense in the long term, i'm guessing everything is just a short term fix? I'd rather get the job done properly (well ok, the local garage does it but the thoughts there!), that way you don't need to worry about it going wrong 3 miles down the road.



 
update

tyres - sorted 215/60/15 kumho's fitted and balanced
discs - sorted new zimmerman discs all round
F wheel bearings - sorted
R wheel bearings - half sorted .. really need new stub axle and hub on OS
steering column - gonna bin the PAS so it can stay as-is till i've got a rack.


 
It'll be interesting to see how you get on with the Zimmerman disks. They don't have a good reputation on here (some people say they are OK, some people say they warp if you do so much as sneeze enthusiastically on them. And everyone says they rust like buggery.)

Are they? I have ATE disks on the front of my S2, with Mintex pads, and it doesn't seem to stop *that* well. Both disks and pads are getting on for 2k miles old, and they work, but don't bite quite as hard as I seem to recall the old ones doing (although I don't know the brand of the old ones.)

That said, they are getting better the more they are used. Perhaps that's it - bedding in.

I've just done two trackdays in the last month on my 4000 mile/10 month old Zimmermans, and despite my best efforts at Donington and Oulton, I've not managed to warp them...

You're right about the rusting hub though, Oli....[8|][:mad:]
 
Sorry about the rust Nick! FWIW, a rub-down and a bit of smoothrite is meant to be a (fairly) easy and quick solution.

Hi all
I am a new user to this forum and im in much need of some help ... my porsche 944 is ill :-(

I have low oil pressure - i have changed the sender gauge and the oil light is still on. The car runs fine when idoling cold the oil gauge reads 1bar - then when idoling hot the guage reads 3bar.

Can anyone shed any light on what it could be?!!

hmm .. wasnt aware of the dubious zimmerman reputation .. still, for £26 im not expecting miracles, and doubt i'll feel short changed however they perform.

what is annoying is being sent the wrong hub seals .. and not noticing till after i'd butchered the originals .. [:mad:]
