Folks

I appreciate that this is another subject that has prob been done to death BUT ........... what am I doing wrong. The button in the cab works, I can hear and see the release mechanism working but the hatch will not open. If I have somebody push the button whilst pull on the hatch it releases and opens. What is it that make hatch release when button is pressed, is it anything to do with the compression of the hatch seal or stanchions. Spent hours on it and getting very frustrated.

Thankyou

You probably need new gas struts. Even then they can stick if it hasn't been opened in a while. The catches may not be aligned properly to the pins either.

Have you watch the pin holes with the hatch open, your looking for both claws to retracted. As the help from your force is helping I think the pins are catching on the mechanism. Under the mech should be two bolts lossen them off and open and close the hatch a few times see if it gets easier. The mech could be stuck to the body and not slipping to the place the pins are pulling it. Once it right go in from inside with the hatch closed and do the nuts up. Then check the merchant again to check both claws open if they don't lossen the nuts slightly till there just work

Both sets of claws appear to retract fully are they supposed to stay retracted? as they go back to position immediatly

That's what they should do. If you watch them when the button is pressed (two people, or VERY long arms [:D]) they open and close repeatedly.

Assuming the jaws retract, the hatch needs to pop free from them before they re-latch. That means it needs to be free from being stuck to the seal, and have enough "spring" in it to raise itself. New struts should make a huge difference, but buy proper ones.

And a new seal will add buoyancy to your opening also. New struts, seal and locks/pins adjusted correctly equals hatch open fully upon button press [:)]

Really wouldn't worry about it opening by itself, iv heard this was the idea, but never really worked with out content maintenance. New gas struts can cause the glass to De bond from the frame. I think it's a pin adjustment issue's. Don't grease the pins inside off the holes look like middle bearing so but that just plastic cone. Slicone spray may help but a good clean with wd40 and a stiff wire push though the drain hose after should make sure they not blocked

To make the hatch work, I found that this is the order you should attack the job:

1. Adjust or replace hatch pins (worn pins affect the process)
2. Remove pin catches, clean and grease (years of crud don't help)
3. Loosely fit catches, operate a few times then tighten (make the hatch find its "true" position)
4. Lubricate hatch seal (helps the hatch not to stick)
5. Replace Bowden cable (it stretches)
6. Replace gas struts (you wont regret it)
7. Remove wiper (not really necessary)

If after all that - Give up! [:D]

Spot on Andy
Point 3 above is really important - I remember tightening up the catches on one car and finding that the hatch wouldn't open at all. I've also found the "claws" can get gummed up and don't retract properly so #2 above.

I really like the "self opening" feature with new struts - very cool [:D]

Yes so do I, in fact I have 2 new struts I may fit this evening if time permits. I shall wait for my hatch to de-laminate and eject itself half way down the road!! [;)]
