944 rear suspension

Hi, just bought my 944 2.5 and the rear end is really soft. Any idea where i should start? Also where is the best place to buy parts. I am in Bromsgrove worcs. Thanks Martin.

Shock absorbers would be a good start. I've got a pair of turbo rear shocks which I bought off ebay a couple of years ago that I never got round to installing. They were supposed to have only been on the car for 6 month. They seem in good nick though the top plastic shroud on one is split. I don't think this would affect the units performance though. I'd be willing to let them go for little money just to shift them so it could be a low cost/low risk way of trying some different shocks to compare with what you've currently got.

However you should understand that even on the turbo's and S2's the stock suspension is pretty soft compared with even bog standard modern family cars, so it could be there is nothing wrong with your current suspension except that you've got used to firmer and firmer suspension over the years.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I would be interested in the shock's I am trying to build up a few spares for the car. I am going to use it for track days and want the car to be as good as I can afford. Any advice on good affordable tyres? My local place has some marshalls which look pretty good, £50.00 for the rears 225/50 16, £45.00 for the fronts 205/55 16 has anyone ever used Marshalls? Thanks for the help.

It depends how far you ant to go, you can fit a thicker rol bar, there are several different thickness options available, If you want to stiffen the rear suspension, thicker torsion bars from 944 turbo/S2 or 968 will help the rear end. However if you do all that you will have to stiffen the front or you will be very tail happy.

Hi, not sure what my car is it's 1986 oval dash model does that make it an S2? It is fitted with a turbo body kit (slightly ashamed of this) but it is a good car which feels a bit floaty on the road (suspension and tyres i suspect). That said I really like the way it handles and is a breath of fresh are compared to my Audi S3 which handles so well its a bit boring.

I've got turbo rear torsion bars as well as I replaced mine with M030 when I installed the KW. They are 23.5mm dia. Though installation of these is a big job.

welcome to the forum Martin. If yours is a 1986 model its a 2.5lt 8 valve Lux.
My first 944 was a 1986 model.Brilliant car I had for 9 years.
Its an important change-over year for the 944 lux's and many parts were sourced from pre 86 parts bin and others from the post 1986 stock. Bit of a nightmare really so you would be well advised to quote your vin No when ordering parts.

The 944S model is a 2.7lt and the 944S2 1988 onwards is a 16 valve 3.0lt and has the turbo body kit as standard.

first thing I would do is check your tyre pressures. If you do a lot of high speed motorway driving manufacturers recommend sticking an extra 3 lbs in all round which makes the handling and responsiveness completly different.

Ooh - a chance to pick you up twice in one post!! Or be proved wrong twice....[&:]

944S is 2.5 16 valve, n'est pas? 2.7 was only the run-out Lux?

Sticking my neck out here. I run slightly under with tyre pressures, particularly rears. My van has tyre recommendations based on 2 tonnes load, useless when it's empty but great fun in an over-steery kind of way. I've always assumed that the 944 tyre pressures are designed to allow for 4-up Autobahn runs at max speed, and should be reduced by a couple of psi for average UK use?

I agree that the worst thing you can have is uneven pressures, the steering is very sensitive to tyre pressure on mine at least.

To clarify, turbo body kit?? S2 or Turbo cars have different front PU, wings and rear bumper rubber, with the under-body "wing" and axtra trim along the cills.. Luxes and the rare "s" have their own front end, wings and the option of the very smart "toast rack" to complete the rear end. [:)]

Hi, thanks for the ideas I think the first thing I need to do is to get 4 new tyres as the ones on it do not match (which really bugs me[]) and are perished. Then see what its like, it was a cheap one so its fair to assume the bushes and suspension will be a bit tired, where would you recomend buying spares from? Thanks Martin.

Interesting.....my S2 always feels as if it's wandering a bit. Replaced the lower steering column joint (a rubber UJ with no chance of survial next to the exhaust manifold!), and it's better but still not running perfectly straight.

Wonder if that's tyre pressure related....it's by the book at present (36 psi F & R), but I might try dropping one end or the other a few pounds.

What do you think?

Other possibility is the rattle at o/s/r that's still there even though we've stripped out trim and fiddled with things. Now I come to think of it, it sounds a bit like a shock absorber bush might have gone (distant memory of MoT failure on one of my early bangers!!)
