944 Resto

I bought a 1984 oval dash 944 this weekend which is in lovely condition internally with the maroon cloth interior and body has no rust and no dings and in Gold. Teledials unmarked. New discs and pads badly rusted over but were brand new 18 months ago.

Hasn't moved an inch since 2009

The gearbox was dropped out 20 months ago to sort a linkage problem and to replace a main bearing oil seal the car has sat with no engine oil or water in since then.

It had just had - in 2009 and at 129,000 miles - new belts and full service.

Do you think there could be problems as no oil or water has been in the engine for 20 months?

Not sure of what damage might occur from a lack of oil or water in the engine other than surface rust. It might be worth slinging some oil in turning it over by hand a few times.

I'm sure somebody with more experience will be along in a minute to give some more sound advice though.

Not sure if you can still get it but recall at one time you could get water pump lubricant to add to the cooling system. Might be worth trying just to help lube up all the seals

I'm not a profesional Mechanic But I would warm some oil up and fill the engine with it then turn over by hand a few times.

Didn't think the oval dash came along until 1985?

Hi Steve, another Huntingdon owner!

HI. Yes indeed!

In fact this is my second 944, I already have a very nice 1986 Alpine White with leather which I was going to convert for trackday etc.

Instead I got this other one sooooooooo cheap but just needs reassembly. Once its back and we can see if its ok mechanically I will hopefully be stripping it out and do susp/brake mods followed by mild engine tune.

In the meantime I am hammering a Punto 1.8HGT round tracks which I have to admit is a very chuckable car with freely revving motor!

You will want to change the belts if they have been sitting in the same position for 2 years and be prepared for a waterpump sooner or later.

Yes its a shame I have a receipt for £428 with the car for 2 belts and tensioners dated Aug 2008 but as you say they haven't turned for so long they will probably be unwise to use.

Shame!
