944 rust

Trying to buy a 944 Turbo or S2. Looked at a lovely car yesterday but sadly the sills were rusting from the inside - my mechanic said it would have failed an MOT as rust was evident around the suspension struts. Is this common?

Where should I be watching out for rust on these things?
 
Sills are often the achilles heel as are the bottom of the front wings just behind the front wheel.
The rubber skirts on the sills are a bit of a muck and moisture trap.
I also have a little rust around the number plate lights on the rear.
But generally as the bodywork was galvanised not much of an issue for the age of the vehicles.
Budget about £1000 to put the sills in order depending on how bad they are.

Around the struts though?

I wondered about that, as well.

I'm assuming that's rust that's spread from inside the rear wing behind the cill? It wouldn't have to move far to affect the rear suspension.
 
Only the sills and bottom of the front wings on Turbos and S2 are possibly common. Anything by the suspension struts is a definite rareity (thank goodness)
 
On my car the struts themselves have a bit of rust on them where the powder coating or paint has eroded over the years but it's no different to what i've seen on every other car i've had and is not dangerours by any stretch. It certainly has not caused any problems at MOT time.
 
I have just got som photos of another potential car. Pictures are (rather obviously) of the insides of the winds - how do they look to you guy's expert eyes.

The S2/turbo wings corrode from the inside out and the first victim of the corrosion are the brackets that the plastic underwing trip bolts to. Give this trim a wobble - it should be firmly bolted and shouldn't move but if it moves or feels loose then it is likely that these brackets have corroded away. You will be struggling to find a car with no corrosion at all in this area - well one that's been used well at least.

If those last photo's are of the area behind the rear wheel where the wheel arch rim curls round under the car then this area gets blasted by stones and stuff thrown up from the wheel so it is likely that this area might look a bit worse for wear. Obviously check for any deep or seriaous corrosion in this area but it isn't an area known to be a problem area for corrosion. The typical problem areas as I've gleened are:-

- under the front wing on S2/turbo models (other models have different wings)
- Sills that corrode from the inside out you it is difficult to ispect in this area.
- under the battery in the rear where water can collect if the drain tubes are blocked
- floor pan can be suseptable if the drains are blocked - check for wet or damp carpet

I'm sure others will add to this list, but these are the key things to look out for as best you can in my book.
 
Thanks for that Scott - last car I looked at had corroded sills, so I am terrified of travelling the length and breadth of the country to view cars with badly corroded wings, like the last one I saw.
 
Those pictures show the areas that I call the 'wheel arch lips' and any car that has been used will have evidence of chipping and minor surface corrosion due to the sand blasting effect of stones over the years. They look incredibly good from the pictures and as long as you touch in the chipping a couple of times a year it should go no further.

Paul is right - there is nothing to worry about in those pics. That is just minor surface rust in locations which are hit by road dirt and grit.

What model 944 are you after and what's your budget. Mine might have to be up for sale very shortly [:(]

I am looking for an S2 (or Turbo) up to £4500, preferably less, but I am a bit of a fussy bugger so want something that has been cherished. White is my preferred colour!!!
 
A genuinely cherished S2 or Turbo with an owner that knows he has a good one will cost considerably more than £4500

If you are lucky you may find someone who is asking a low price because he's seen all the ads out there for the 'less than cherished' examples. There is a massive difference between a good 18 year old 944 and a bad one [:(]
