944 S2 1991

Hi Guys,
Having probs with my 944 s2,about two weeks ago i had a service perform on my s2 new oil,k & n filter and k&n air filter and the leads are new.The DME was ok too.
and just passed it MOT with no probs.

Left the car for a few days when i was working over seas.Got home looking forward to taking her for a long run. Turn her on and there was something wrong ,the idle was very
erratic and she was hunting. when i went for a drive and she had a power flat spots when you accelarate. but when she was warm she was ok,but now it the same each morning.

any ideas?

Sounds like no cold start enrichment.
I have no personal experience of this problem (touch wood) but it sounds like a possible failure of the temperature sensor that tells the DME the engine is cold, so extra enrichment needed. There is a description here:

Hi Guys, Sorted out the firing order with the leads,but still will not start? Plugs all good and so are he leads.
what else can i look at ? thanks
 
Hi, I had a similar problem last year. I found this article on clarkes garage 'ELECT-22, Air Flow Meter (AFM) Operation and Testing' which I followed and I haven't had a problem since.
 
Disconnect the temp sensor for the DME and see if it makes any difference - towards the front of the engine on the RH side of the block, with a blue top. Not the one further back and lower which is the sensor for the guage. I only have a lux, but assume same on S2. I believe the S2 has a 'get home' mode on the DME which should take over when disconnected. Quick search of the forum should give a bit more info on this one........

thanks guys i will have a look,the rac man said that it could be the fuel pump,as he could not hear it priming,so i have a new pump and also got a new fuel filter.(as i think it could be some thing to do with the fuel. thanks jas.
 
Never looked at fuel pump before but did the filter on my old S2 not so long ago, it was dead easy. Pipe clamp the fuel line on the feed side, then two spanners needed, one to hold the fixed hex of the female end of the filter, the other for the pipe nut. Undo, swap over, tighten up, job done [:)]

Ref the pump, have you looked at Clarks Garage web site?

I would strongly advise you not to replace your fuel pump and fuel filter. It is extremely unlikely there is anything wrong with either and it is the first two things that people suggest you replace when they know nothing about how the Bosch fuel injection and ignition system works.

the pump on the Porsche 944 doesn't run continuously when you switch the ignition on. It runs for about 1 second just long enough to pressurize the fuel rail then the ECU switches it off. it doesn't start pumping again until the ECU gets feedback that the engine is turning over at 200rpm+ during cranking .

Your first test should be check for spark ?
If you have a spark check you have plenty of fuel in the tank (min 3 galls )
Check your engine is turning over at least 200rpm
Check the spark plugs after cranking the engine . They should be wet with unburnt fuel.?

If you have fuel and a spark then you should fit a 3x way bypass cable in place of your DME relay and see if it starts.

I had a similar problem to you last year,tried everything you have with no luck, took the car to Hartech, after days of investigation they found that my fuel had been contaminated with water, cleaned the ststem out and fired up first time and run perfect ever since. Still do not know how water got into the tank, suspect fuel station

thats very good advice Colin.
My S2 has twice given starting problems which turned out to be water in the fuel because I let the tank run down to empty both times. The water settles to the bottom of the tank and presumably with such a high proportion of water to fuel it fails to ignite when the engine is cold the next time you try to start the engine.

Jaysonj If you let your tank run out before this problem started its definitely a possibility.
