944 S2 3.0 Questions

Hello
Sorry to bother you guys with such questions but I'm car shopping in the spring and have a shortlist now of 3....

Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo
Lotus Elan SE Turbo
Porsche 944 S2 3.0

I only drive 6k per year (weekends only) so dont need anything practical, I want something run to drive with a bit of style.
The 944 seems a good buy that can take alot of miles. What can I expect for 6k (private buy) and what should I being looking out for, excpet clutch, cambelt and dodgy history?
Whats the 0-60mph, 0-100mph and 30-70mph times?

I like the idea of RWD alot!

No bias here, but it's the pick of your shortlist by a country mile [;)]

Search on things like buying advice (or just have a look through - there aren't that many posts on here yet).

The big Achilles heel of the S2 is the cam chain. It's a simplex which wasn't exactly over-engineeried in itself and it uses a nylon slipper as a tensioner, and as if that isn't bad enough it wasn't checked as part of the main dealer maintenance schedule[:(] These days everybody who you would want to trust to look after an S2 knows all about it but in some cases the chain has worn excessively and has damaged the sprockets. They are integral to the cams so it's not a small piece of work to correct. Also I know personally of several cases where the case-hardening on the sprockets is failing which ultimately results in broken teeth. Many S2's you see advertised have had a recent chain and tensioner, but just like you don't replace a motorbike chain without renewing the sprockets at the same time I personally think that's a worthless thing to do if there was any wear at all apparent in the chain - and I'm guessing a lot of chains don't get replaced if they don't look worn.

Don't be put off though - I bought my S2 cab at Easter last year despite having had missing teeth on the cams of my previous S2 coupe. Because it's impossible to trust the condition without someone experienced actually looking (mileage doesn't help much) I bought it at a price that I felt took into account the cost of replacing the cams if they needed to be (and guess what? They were replaced within a fortnight).

Other problems are the usual stuff for any car: accident damage, water in the oil, clunky suspension etc. but nothing you wouldn't expect to look out for on a car that is now at least 12 years old (and you shouldn't see any of them, of course).

Clutches you mention and they can be a problem as the centre is a rubber bush rather than springs and it can break up before the friction material is worn (been there, done that in my coupe too [8|])

On the bright side I have 162,000 miles on my cab (and 153,000 on my Turbo) and it still feels like it always did (I guess - 60k is about the least used I've driven). Trim wears well, it's galvanised so there should be no rust (although where the bottom of the wheelarches gets blasted with stones can go a little, especially with wider rims than standard) and if they are well maintained they are very reliable.

If you're seriously considering a Fiat or a Lotus then you can't be scared of the spanners!

I'd pay £5-£6k for a nice one and be prepared to spend another £1,500 sorting out cams.

Oh, you asked about figures. I think the S2 was 6.1 to 60 and 149 flat out. 30-70 I could only guess at, but in the right gear fairly quick.

After 120mph is not much good as doing this speed is a bit risky on todays UK roads.

Thanks for all the great advice though, I will continue to do some more homework and test drive one hopefully in the next few months.

Anyone got any idea of the times I was asking about? This would be good if so.

The Lotus has an Izuzi engine so should be reliable, the Fiat is OK if you get a good one thats had the cambelt and exhaust manifold jobs done.

Been doing alot of homework regarding the Fiat, a bit on the Elan and now starting on the Porsche.

Anyone have a buyers guide and maybe some reviews I can read through?

Hi Dan,

I've had an S2 for over 5 years and racked up 50,000 miles in total as our family car with two young children and also on track several times before getting a Turbo for that sort of fun [:D]

I kept a record of my total bills and now budget about £800 a year to keep it serviced, repaired and tyred for about 10k miles a year and it's never let me down (well apart from a dead battery once [;)] )

Performance figures always vary wideley. The official ones from Porsche in my handbook are supposed to be easily achievable by an ordinary driver with a passenger, full tank, and luggage in the boot as opposed to most other manufacturers claims:

0-60 7.1 seconds
Max 149mph

However I have a book containing many road tests over the years and Autocar in 1989 tested the S2 at

0-60 6.0 seconds
0-100 15.5 seconds
30-70 5.6 seconds

Hope this helps

I have owned a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo, Portofino Blue in the past. Not too different to the Baltic Blue colour of my current 944s2. I dearly loved the Coupe, black leather, air-con etc. It has more useable back seats ( if that is an issue! ) but I find the boot of the 944 more convient. And yes, it will do 155mph ... I thought it was very well built and looked great. Look for curbed alloys as this is the achilles heel of the car. To me, the s2 is everything the Coupe was but then excels it in everyway. I know which one puts a bigger smile on my face! Buy the Porsche!

Lovely, lovely car. My first Porker some ten years ago.

The biggest four pot engine with the smoothness of a six -you won't regret it.

50/50 weight distribution gives delightful handling and a useful track day car.

One Xmas we managed a booze cruise to Boulogne with baby and toddler, pushchair, travel cot and winter coats and baggage and still racked out the rear seat footwells with a couple of dozen bottles of wine -which also did wonders for the handling. [:)]

Have fun!!

Lotus is a well known acronym Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious.

Try the following sentences :-

"I've got a Porsche"

"I've got a Fiat"

I rest my case [;)]

Forgot to add about the Fiat is the turning circle. Imagine something very large and round, perhaps the size of the moon... thats your turning circle, making a simple three point turn into several.
