944 S2 Convertible roof noise

Hi fellow 944ers

I have recently purchased a 1991 S2 convertible and I am slowly finding my way round it, so I'm looking for some seasoned advice on certain areas. Today is the power roof.

The area I'm concerned about is the automatic roof, I have heard that the power hood can be very expensive to repair so being as I want to keep the hood powered (not manual as many peeps suggest) I would like to know is there any service routines. The roof is slightly noisy when in motion, sounds like the gears are slightly grinding but doesn't sound terrible, is this usual? The operation is fine, seems strong and opens and closes fine just a bit noisy. I would like to know is there area that should be greased and and nuts and bolts checked for tightness.

Thanks all

I sprayed all the pivot points on the roof of my 968 cab (same roof as a 944S2 cab) with PTFE dry lubricant and treated all the rubber parts with Gummipflege (you need the roof half open for both of these). It improved things, and cut down the squeeks while driving. I do this about every 6 months. I also gummipflege all the rubber door, bonnet and boot seals (on both cars!) every 6 months, and where the end of the dash contacts the door also got some PTFE spray.

Hi All

The roof noise is fine whilst the car is driving, pretty quiet to be fair. It's the gears in the winding mechanism when the roof is being opened or closed that seem to have a grinding noise, sounds a bit like a wind up clockwork robot. I'm worried just in the case of the gears are giving up/need lubricating, maybe its
totally normal to make this noise?

Yeah, sorry I wasn't clearer - I meant the operation of the roof is noisy in mine, rather than general noise in the car when driving.

Cheers,
Bryan
