944 S2 engine & other bits ....

I've come to the conclusion that this rusty 944 of mine is a lost cause - the costs just aren't stacking up for me. I've also uncovered a receipt (from Jan 04) for replacement of a brake pipe and the fuel line around the rear axle - 8.00 for flexible fuel pipe and 3.00 for clips - I assume these were jubilee clips that at some point will rust to nothing and spew fuel everywhere!

So, I have decided to get my hands dirty and learn something about this car by taking it apart. I was thinking of ebaying the parts - the first of which I want to get out of the way is the engine.

I was thinking of putting a reserve on the engine of £875 - does this sound reasonable?

Phil

I have no idea how this would work out for you but you could offer it complete to Porschapart, Douglas Valley etc. If they gave you money back then (in your position, speaking personally) I would go for it. They might offer that for a car with good engine, transmission, interior, some panels and sundries? Of course if you want to try for profit you need to break it yourself but it might take a little while to get your money back and trust me a car gets a lot bigger when you stop keeping things like the engine inside it. Is your wife understanding of breaking a car on the drive/in the garage?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I'm trying to resist saying I'll have the engine as a basis for a 3.0 16v turbo conversion - I think that might just cost me more than I have to spare just now, what with a divorce to fund as well as the install...[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

My best offer so far has been 1k from a breakers. I'm not trying to make a profit, as such, but would love to hang onto the sports seats (for now) and financially the only way I can make it work for me would be to break the poor thing apart [:(]
My wife is understanding of the situation and, amazingly, is supporting me with the purchase of a replacement 944 - although she is urging me to be extra cautious next time - can't think why. Breaking it is a large undertaking that I have thought long and hard about, but to let it go for 1k would kill me and I'd bet that my own divorce would soon follow!

It'll break for more than a bag of sand. Try to sell the engine first so the buyer can drive the car with it in as that should net more than selling as a lump of metal of unknown provenance.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]What are the front wings like? In the (unlikely, given the state of the underneath of it) event that they are good they are worth money, the doors should be solid and worth money, someone was talking about needing a hatch just this week (might have been on Titanic), the wheels will net a bit if they are tidy. All the lights, badge panel, light lids, front PU nosecone, sunroof etc. are worth something. Then you have rear wiper, power windows, mirrors etc. etc. You'll make £2k back and keep the interior even just putting the bits on eBay.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

It's real hit and miss what you will get for parts on ebay. I've just got an excellent S2 wing for £28.00. If you decide to break on ebay please post here as there are load of little bits and pieces I am looking for.

£28 for a wing is superb if it doesn't have a crunchy bottom corner![FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I tend to agree with the eBay caveat, but if you put things up at the end of the month (when people have been paid) and word the listing well - no backgrounds, showing graphics or nonsense IMO - and if you have a good feedback rating then by telling everyone here and on Titanic they are listed you have a good chance of getting fair money. In fact when I sold the electricals I took out of my car I think I sold both window regulators to people I knew for a good deal all round without putting the word out I was selling them.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Hi Phil,
If you do decide to break the poor thing then I may well be interested in the engine, ecu etc. What's its history, oil usage, oil pressure and so on?
Best regards,
Peter.

Good shout Peter - I never thought of you but it could be ideal...[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Unless you want a recently rebuilt Turbo with a k26/8, MAF, ECU's and custom remap [;)][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Nooo; must... resist.... 3.0 16v.... conversion....[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Phil, Fen put me on to this and I'd be happy to negotiate on your rear hatch. If you do decide to break it I can probably talk myself into 'needing' more bitsby the time I get to you![8D]

Cheers

If you brake it and add the parts on ebay don't expect to sell them.

Rear hatch £30
Doors £30 a pair
Bonnet £15

If a breaker will give you £1K take it, if not you will end up taking most of it to the local dump

Hi i would have the air filter housing i would even give you my cone one in place if you decided to sell it in one piece paul.

If you haven't already, I would highly recommend contacting Simon at Porschapart. I sold my front damaged lux to him for £1000 over 2 years ago after it was written off for me. Very good to deal with, and might surprise you in what you could get for it.

i think this is good advice.

unless you are mechanically minded, breaking and selling it yourself will be an awful lot of effort.

Presumably you want rid asap, so you can get yourself into a decent one.

I think £875 would be a very good reserve if you can demonstrate the engine still runs well, so follow Fens advice and sell that first.

You can hear us vultures circling already [:D]

I think Siggy is being waaaaay to harsh.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I just did a mental tot-up just now. This is what I have done, not speculated about, done. I have sold (primarily on eBay and failing that to mates at mates' rates or through word of mouth on here and Titanic) 2 window regulators with motors, 2 central locking actuators, central locking "brain", rear wiper, 2 fog/driving lamps, switches from centre console and doors, mirrors, luggage blind, headlamp adjustment motors, anti-roll bars, front and rear seats, sill trims and air-con condenser. All this from my car (my car that I still drive!) and I got something like £1,300 for that lot. You have all of that stuff (except the air-con) plus loads more to sell and if you did the same as me you'd need to realise another £700 to break even or £1,250 if you want to break financially even and keep the seats, still with a good engine and gearbox to sell plus other stuff like PAS kit, carpets, tool roll, blower motor, radiator, brakes etc. etc. You'll easily be in profit here.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]In fact scratch that, breaking it is a dumb idea. I'll take the whole car off your hands for the £2k you paid for it or £1,600 less the seats.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Points taken about breaking it vs selling it - If I accepted 1k from a breaker for the car (which is the amount I have been offered) then

a) my wife would kill me [:(]
b) i wouldn't be able to keep the bits I feel are worth keeping
c) the breaker makes a profit, i'll make a loss and the guys that have asked me for parts on here will be paying a premium to get them from the breakers

I accept that it will take time and effort but stood up against the facts above I think it'll be worth it. The engine may well be going to one of the members of this forum and is booked in for a leak test on Saturday morning.

If anyone is interested in any other parts, please drop me a mail [;)]

Phil
