944 S2 Gearbox removal !

Hi Guys, I think i have read some where that removing the gearbox on a S2 takes around 12 hrs...Is this correct ?or is this 6hrs out and 6 hrs in ?
 
Certainly not 12 hrs. I took the gbox out a number of times on my S2, typical time was 2 hours out 2.5hrs in. First time is a little more difficult, rusty exhaust bolts, driveshaft bolts that are full of cr*p and getting to know the job.
Be careful with the driveshaft bolts, they are torx type, clean them out thoroughly use the right tool and give it a couple of sharp taps with a hammer before undoing. If you round them they are a pain as they are so hard.
Plastic tube connecting gbox to the bellhousing on ttube is a pain as well.

Sounds a bit steep to me. A work collegue who was having problems with his gearbox on his turbo and removed and re-installed it several times during the process of fixing it reckoned he could have the transaxel out in about 20mins. THe first time you do it might take a bit longer as you battle with old nuts and are sussing your way through the job. I really don't think it is a tricky job. An experienced mechanic can replace a clutch in about 12hrs, which requires the removal of the transaxel.

They make me feel much more normal. (Getting a 944 'box out in 20 mins sounds like the work of superman.)

Did you gents see that show "The Garage" on Satellite about last year where Jock the owner had a 944 in and tried to put a diagnostic tool on it.....[:D]
The garage lads ended up putting a second hand gearbox in it and a new clutch....They hated the job. I cant understand why with all the best of a workshop and tools

A black one as far as I can recall and a very funny episode [;)]
 
Its just been on again this week,it was a black lux which the clutch pedal stuck to the floor,they replaced the clutch etc several times but in the end it was the fork that moves the bearing that was slightly bent. At one point jock wanted to pour petrol over it and toast marsh mallows !!!
 
I missed that one ...[:mad:] thats right I forgot about the clutch fork.... Was that the same episode that Jock blamed a bent connecting rod on a TDCi Fiesta on a puddle of water...? Point blank accused the lady owner of driving into a puddle...... In Marbella Hello.....[:D]
 
AH, may be that was what i read, removing clutch not gearbox ! The problem i have is the car rattles like a GT2 race car on pole at silverstone !!! when its out of gear with the clutch up. Cant remember what the fault is, is it a realease bearing or some sort of rubber bush (or lack of it ?)... [:)]
 
The general consensus is that it's your idler gear. Once past a certain age they all do that. A new or rebuilt box will be quiet, but mine has had the rattle for 9 years with no other problem
 
mine too, it rattles away at the rear when ticking over in neutral but goes quiet the instant I depress the clutch. If the rattle is coming from the front it will be the clutch bearing.
 
Thanks Guys i wont bother with it unless forced too, any how i like the rugged noises, when i listen to the cars in pits and paddocks i think the cars sound great even though they sound like there falling a part ! [:)]
