944 S2 Gearbox

Can someone tell me if I've got the right advice and about how much it's gunna cost me to replace the gearbox on my 944 S2 please.

I've been told that it's best to have it rebuilt rather than trying to source one from another car. I'm not sure what the problem is, however it makes an ever increasing noise from about 40mph which is not affected by the gear that I'm in, (I thought it was a diff problem, but then someone who knows tells me different.), I had the gearbox serviced shortly after the noise started and the oil that came out was black and burnt even though I've had the car serviced by a reputable dealer that sold me the car in the first place, (I have paid over the odds to ensure I've had the best service.), and they have done everything that was needed over the 10 years that I've owned it. The guys who took replaced the oil reckoned that it was the wrong oil and hence the burning and metal swarf found in the dregs.

I love the car and want to to the best, but I don't want to get ripped off.

Id look for a suitable replacement from a known-good car. Id suspect the differential bearing, which wont be cheap to replace. There was a time when getting the transaxle rebuilt was worthwhile, but thats long-passed. Simon

Have you tried going out in a few different cars? I hope this doesn't come across as patronising, but the gearboxes are often very noisy yet run for years. My S2 sounds like the gearbox is from a touring car, but it's had a clean bill of health from the guys who service it.

As Paul says; some cars are screamers. Ive named my 2.7 'Banshee', but I drove a Turbo Cab when it was nearly new, with under 15,000 miles on it; and it was louder.

I had quotes of 'from Ă‚ÂŁ600' a few years back, and for that it was mostly the labour to strip down and clean an already removed gearbox, the parts will add a lot to that - I'd guess at Ă‚ÂŁ2k from start to finish... I too would go with a known used box, they're so cheap that you can afford to get through a few and still have spent less, I've also heard horror stories of rebuilt boxes becoming noisy quickly, so if you do go for a rebuild check what their warranty covers (and their idea of a noisy box might be different from yours). The sound insulation in the rear of a 944 is very important, try adding some more material under the carpets if you want to ignore it for a while, it can take off quite a lot of noise.

You could get the LSD as an option on the S2, quite rare. Easy enough just to fit a Turbo box with LSD, with the higher final drive, you'll get more MPG on a run (and the box is stronger!) Alasdair

Thanks for all the replies. Really impressive ! Nope, I've tried any other 944s, so I have only mine and comparing now with before when it was quiet, not Roller quiet, but not the volume it gets to now where the radio is on 11 and I still can't hear it. I'll try the sound proofing as there doesn't seem to be any other issue, (power is still there), and see what happens. Alasdair, hold that thought. I might take you up on it.

Hi Pete, Assuming this is a very sudden and noticable change, there might be a problem. You don't say where you are in your profile, but I'm sure someone local to you would be happy to do a comparison.

Agreed, that doesn't seem at all good, does sound like your box is toast. Alasdairs price seems good if its is known good and comes with a warranty (which i'm sure it will).

I'm down in Surrey, just outside Leatherhead. I wouldn't say sudden, but I was driving down to Poole one morning and the noise got gradually worse and worse. I didn't really notice how bad until I drove the car later and it was very noticeable. So I'm inclined to think that 'toast' might be right. I have driven it afterwards for probably another 500 miles after I had the box serviced and it's not got any worse. The car is now sitting all alone in my garage until I can decide what to do.

Am in your area if you want a comparison - live in Crawley, work in Reigate, grew up in Fetcham...... PM me if you would like to meet up and compare noise !

Maybe Fetcham is Porsche in English !!!! Thanks for the offers, I have to wait until the new year when I'll take it out of the garage and see what's what.

Lived in effingham for a long time. I now live in wonersh. You could compare the noise to to my cabrio, but you will have to wait untill it comes out of storage in the spring.
