944 S2 Mileage to Empty

Approximatly what's the range from the fuel light coming on to an empty tank?
or better still, what's the maximum safe mileage to assume without actually emptying the tank?

I don't think there is a safe limit: there's no guarantee that the gauge is at all accurate. Should be a gallon from memory, so 30 miles gentle driving, but I wouldn't risk it.

My Japanese delivery '91 S2 doesn't have a low fuel light (that I've ever seen - certainly doesn't light up at key on before startup). My '08 Infiniti has a low fuel warning that gives a read out or remaining kilometers (miles if you switch the readouts). The hilarious thing about the Infiniti is that 5 kilometers of steady highway travel reduces the remaining range by about 10k - around town, every stop and start drops it about 5-6 k.

So - low fuel light means get some gas as soon as safely possible :)

I have a lot of experience of this!;-)

Firstly there is a difference from summer to winter driving - in the summer I could get 400miles to a tankful, in the winter it is down to 375. On one occasion where I had the space-saver on for 200miles I got 500miles on a tankful, so that shows how much difference sticking to 50mph and driving gently makes.

Which puts the reserve mileage into context. Obviously it could vary from car to car with manufacturing tolerances etc. However... I used to panic at 25 miles. I have, however, have an occasion when the petrol station I was intending to fill at was shut, late at night - on that occasion I covered I think it was 46 miles with the reserve light on. Typically I fit 70 litres in the tank, the maximum I can see is 74 litres. So if it is an 80 litre tank (?) I should still have a significant amount left.

Regards,

Tref.
