944 S2 oil in coolant / won't hold idle

Hi guys,

Need some wisdom before I take this challenge on!

Bought an S2, 1 month ago, done approx 1000 miles no problem - yesterday drove 800yards gave way to traffic -car dies? Fire it up and sounds like its missing 2 cylinders. Limp car back 800 yards, order DME relay (arrives Wednesday) and buy some spark plugs, change sparks - all 4 are jet black, car no improvement, look at my coolant tank and see its got oil contamination! So first thought - head gasket, but dipstick is clean? Could it be water pump bearing only and DME? Not sure if I got 1 or multiple problems here!

Any help much appreciated but have a feeling I'm gonna have to strip this :(
 
Sudden rough running I'm thinking ignition rather than mechanical.

Have you checked your distributer?
 
Not yet John, for the distributor cap, if I remember rightly its unplug leads, 3 fixings, remove top and inspect 4 contact points & arm for wear?

Other than that for ignition, its leads which do look original/old, and DME on order and another borrowed in hand to try tonight - or have I forgotten something (battery is ok - car cranks fine!)


 
Compression tested all cylinders are 180 psi plus.... starting to think spark is definitely issue - going after DME and distributor
 
Sure oil cooler sounds like a good starting point, however never removed one? Where is it located - I'm guessing side of the block under intake manifold?

Also update on investigation - 1 lead is definitely corrorded - distributor cap looks worn but reasonable? (see pic) there is a chip on the central contact which could explain all 4 not firing? Rotor is there but again showing signs of age.

Ordered new leads, Distributor cap - Rotor I'm questionning but for £40 I'm thinking do the lot then it saves the question!

I've cleared the header and it appears to be coming back - not as bad, dipstick still clean - is there a way to check oil cooler? Are they difficult to access?
 
the oil cooler is one of those jobs you wish you never started, its not hard but just dam awkward and fiddly, plus you need an OPRV alignment tool


 
Oh dear! I'm guessing with the compression coming back ok (180psi across all 4 +/- 5psi on 3 cranks) its the cooler which is most probable :( checked dipstick after a run today and its damp around top I.e. steam, lead indicator of water in oil.

definitely need to research the tool - presuming its the joint and/or o-rings, is it worth replacing other items whilst I'm at it? OPRV for one?
 
Yeah? Although might try nail this sooner rather than later as MJ doesn't need her car til September.

Do I definitely need the OPRV alignment tool? Where can I get one from? For 1987 S2 engine...
 
parts on order but seen this for those who might be tempted with a DIY oil cooler alignment tool (guy recommended it was 1987 onwards due to the change in OPRV) - I haven't compared it to my OPRV, maybe someone else has already made similar? If so please let me know if the dimensions look right! I'll let you know how I get on once I get some parts! Waiting for my seal kit :(


 
can't comment on dimensions as my car is a turbo but I turned up my own OPRV tool out of alloy which worked fine...imho there's no need to spend money on simple things like this. Porsche do seem to like to waste their customers money at times....:)
