Hello All,

Trying to understand the price of a new 944 S2 in 1980's..
Does any one knows any internet site or their own car invoice which shows the price of the car when bought new..?

£31,300 in 1989. 1990 above. Both excluding all options, including compulsory options such as sunroof.

Compulsory options indeed. My 91 S2 was a Japan delivery with no sunroof, cruise, 10 speaker stereo (or maybe no stereo as it had a Sony head unit and Sony speakers) but with power windows, steering and A/C, rear wiper, heated rear glass, adjustable headlights, tinted windshield and windows, split rear seat, etc. Virtually all of these things are listed as "option" codes in the decoder lists although I'm sure a lot of things migrated from optional to standard equipment over the life of the 944.

I've had NO luck trying to find what was "standard" and what was optional for any destination. As you know, different "markets" get different equipment as standard. North America was typically loaded with perhaps partial or full leather and M030 as options - not sure what else. Adjustable headlights were never available in NA as H4 headlights were not legal then - had to be sealed beam type.

I got a Certificate of Authenticity from PCNA for my S2 which seems pretty useless as my only options were 16 ventilier side moldings. I was pretty sure it was going to be iffy as I had to send them a photograph of my VIN as the ZZZ totally confused them and I described the cars equipment. Personally I think they just made it up based on what I told them although they seemed to find an engine and trans serial number - I should check to see if that is whats in my car :)

If anyone has info or can point to a site where this info might be available this would be a great help.

I think we assume a lot now we're all internetted-up, and we expect instant answers. Strangely, we are told that anything on the internet is likely to be inaccurate, but we still want to find out so much and we want it to be true.

The authenticity certificates are perfect example. My car's details were entered on to the selling dealer's system in 1990: why on earth should I be confident that every new IT upgrade transferred the info correctly? I'd rather look at the car to see whether it has leather seats than believe the C of A.

I don't think there can ever be a definitive answer to what was standard in all markets, as individual sales staff could easily option up a car differently to the next dealer.
 
I can be bothered to up load these into photobucket. I don't know the dates of these but as its a 250 turbo it must be 1990 on

Thank you David - this is great info. Now if someone has this for Japan and North America it would be fantastic.

For 944Man - if you are a Windows user you open the attachment(s), save the image to your hard drive and then open them with the Paint program (built in to Windows) and then resize them by 200%. Easy to read at that size. I didn't try printing so I can't say what happens then. Linux and Mac users - you should be able to do similar.

another possible source of this info is an old copy of Autocar. They listed all the New Prices for the cars of the day.

That will only be UK prices obviously, but Car & driver might reveal the USA prices??

Interesting looking back at these things, - Porsches of the late 80's were extremely expensive relative to either todays prices, or to a 3 bed house then and now.

wow so our Cab was around £43,000 new BLIMEY!!!!!!!!! wait 20 years and it's a steal at £5k [:D]
