944 S2 service manual

Hi all - I'm new to the forum.

I've just purchased an S2 Cabriolet (1989 vintage) which needs a few tidying up jobs, such as the starter motor needs attention, as does the hood mechanism and hand brake adjustment. Is there a good service/maitenence book available that will assist?

Thanks

Les

Hi Les - welcome to the forum.

Jims already pointed you in the right direction and if there's anything that Clarks doesn't cover then just post it here. Most problems are something that someones already had, and if it's a rare one someone else will be able to advise or at the very least sympathise whilst gently pulling your leg [:D]

Nice choice of car. Make sure to post pics when you get some.

Thanks for the responses.

I have quite a few jobs to do as I bought from a lady owner who has done 16,000 miles in the last 5 years and has neglected it a little (it's now done 114,000). I'ts last Porsche service was at 98,000 in 1998 when the timing belts were changed, so I know these will need to be done again ASAP. Although it's had regular oil changes I need to attend to the graunchy starter motor, graunchy electric hood mechanism (for which I'm trying to get info on how to remove/repair the motors and gear mechainism before a new hood is fitted), check the brakes, change fluids etc. One particular problem it also has is the lower rear wing on the nearside behind the wheel. It looks as though someone has been a bit sloppy with topping the battery up and acid has dripped down inside the wing, needless to say it has now rotted through so I have a fair sized hole in the botton of the wing! Is this a common problem? Is there a pre-formed panel available for local repair?

Any assistance welcome!

PS - I'll post pictures soon.

When you say 'graunchy' starter motor, do you mean it turns over very slowly to what you are used to? Most S2 that do not have a brand new starter and battery are like this, it does sound very bad at first but is very common. Mine has been like this for the 6 years I've owned it.

Another thing to check is the battery. Those are big pistons to get moving and any slightly off form battery will noticebaly struggle.

It's good to hear that after a few quiet years your car is going to be used as intended again [:)]

It sounds rough when it turns the engine over, but after the engine fires up there is a momentary higher pitched mechanical noise. Sounds to be like the starter dog is slow to retract. I want to take it off, check the teeth and spring mechanism. I think it's age and lack of use, at worst probably a new starter.

Chris Denton posted a message, which although I have been notified by e-mail it doesn't show here. Can you contact me again Chris, I'd like to take you up on your offer and compare notes on our cars.

Hi Rick,

As a relative newcomer, I was looking for parts list/service manual to assist with some jobs I feel I could tackle myself. Nearly considered buying a PET and copy manual off eBay (Doh!)

Many thanks[:)]
