944 s2 shakes

Hi all I’ve just joined the club and thought I’d try and get some help on my s2. It seems to like shaking the steering wheel pretty much all the time. Holding the front wheels at the top and rocking it does give some noticeable movement, more on the near side but certainly on both sides. i initially thought wheel bearings but I’m new to owning a Porsche and would like to make sure I’m not missing a common fault/failure. It has got 17” wheels which I think are boxster wheels, any help would be greatly appreciate. John
 
when you say movement does that include a knocking noise?
before you start replacing bearings, I would suggest you check the age of the tyres this should be in a block of numbers in a surround something like 2216, this would mean week 22 year 2016, if they are less than 5 years old get them re balanced, if they are older consider replacement

if the car has been parked up for a long time they could well be out of round, if they are 17” Boxster wheels I would also check the castor bushes to make sure they are the 968 type

the biggest culprit for top in and out play is wear in the struts, they flex in the middle but this would not normally cause a wobble

There’s a definite knock when you rock the wheel too to bottom but no knock while driving, I don’t know much about the history of the car so there’s a good chance it has been stood for a while. Is there an obvious visual difference to the 968 castor bushes that I could spot?
 
Yes they are round rather than D shaped and one piece rather than a bracket and bush

Quick update, due to me being far too excited that I finally owned a Porsche I seem to have failed to look at the obvious. Both front tyres are different makes and only markings I can find would indicate the tyres are 2013. The castor blocks are 944 so looks like I need to start spending a few quid. I was thinking about rebushing so I guess it’s take it to bits and wave my wallet at it??
 
Sounds like you've found the culprit.

But if not it may also be worth checking the steering column UJ bushing. It's right next to the exhaust manifold on our RHD cars so the rubber goes brittle over time and you get a knock on the steering. Pretty easy to replace though.

Congrats on your purchase. I hope it gives you as much joy (but fewer headaches!) as mine has over the years.
 
I’m not sure I dare look for anymore problems?? I’ve already started looking at new suspension. One thing at a time I guess but I’m looking forward to getting my hands dirty again and trying to learn the way of the Porsche

[:D] Don't blame you!

I may have missed something but wouldn't top and bottom knocking suggest lower ball joint as opposed to side to side knock which indicates bearing?

I'm currently doing suspension all round (shocks) and have just posted about my progress. It's surprisingly straight forward.
 
I think to be fair that once I decide to take the plunge into stripping front end down I’m just gonna replace everything as I really don’t have much history on the car at all. I just need to be able to afford to buy all the bits so I can do it in one go. I’m always interested in stealing other people’s experiences as I have no knowledge at all with Porsche.
