Hi all I'm sean and new to the club, I bought a 944 2.5 1982 , I've got a problem getting it to run , I've changed plugs fuel filter fuel pump, dme relay, I hit wired the old dme as new one didn't work either, the car will fire up for a sec or 2 then die out , I'm not a mechanic of any sort so if anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful as I'm at the point of calling a recovery garage to fix it which defeats my whole purpose of trying to do it all myself to get the car on the road, any advice welcome .

Don't take this the wrong way but the first thing you should do is find a copy of the workshop manual on the internet and download it. Getting a basic understanding of how the target system works is essential to any DIY activity - at least it gets you started in the right place. You can also get a parts manual from the official Porsche website - these are great too as looking at the part assemblies provide a lot of insight when tackling a repair (less so for this particular problem but it will come in handy later).

Your current problem can be caused by a number of issues...the workshop manual contains a DME test plan to follow for troubleshooting these issues. That said...it sounds like you have a fuel supply problem once the engine starts. The DME controls this in two phases - for starting by energizing the fuel pump once the engine is turning 200ish rpm on the starter and for running once the starter is disengaged (you release the key). So your problem could be the ignition switch is going (all contacts not being made once the key is released from the start position), connections to the DME are bad (check the connector plug for corrosion/loose pins), the DME is bad (best to borrow a known good one and try it before spending lots of money only to find out that is not the problem), the fuel pump is not putting out enough volume to keep the car running - just enough to start it.
I'm probably missing some things here but I'm thinking your speed sensor is OK as it knows when the engine is turning over 200 rpm so fuel is supplied for starting.

Thanks guys for the help, I have bought the Hayes manual but as I dont know anyone in the area I will struggle to get a dme to test if that's the problem, I suspect that could be the problem as the fuel seems to be getting to the fuel rail as I checked that by loosening the nut at the end of the rail , there seems to be a new maf and 2 sensors already done , but as I say I'm a complete novice and ive probably bit off more than I can chew lol , anyway guys thank you very much for your reply sir will keep trying using your advice .

best of luck Sean,,,
i am totally useless at any spannering,,,,,
when i popped down to my local specialist recently just for a cup of tea and a gossip i even asked them to sort out my windscreen washers lol,lol as one of them was missing the screen and landing on the roof lol,,now they are perfect lol,,,
Have you any specialists local to you?,,,,,
it may be something simple that they could diagnose in a short time and save you lots of stress and ££,,,,jasonp

I had a similar problem recently and traced it to the ignition switch. I went straight for a new switch which fixed it but they are pretty pricy so I would suggest checking it out first. You can pull the connector off the back of the switch easily and then make up a jumper to Hotwire it and establish if the switch is good or bad.

Re Haynes Manual...In my experience the Haynes manuals provide a decent overall view but often lack important details - and often miss small but important changes from year to year. BUT they are a good supplement to the factory manuals which seem to go lightly on parts of the procedures where they expect their certified technicians to be knowledgeable. So - keep looking for a free downloadable 944 workshop manual and read it end-to-end - several times...it eventually makes sense :)

Hi Jason thank you for the reply I think your idea is the best as I'm dectecting this problem has become a problem I've tried everything Ive told and may not even be checking correctly, I'm fine at all cosmetic stuff and really enjoy that , i was to it was running when I bought it but had not been started in a long time , I did get it started eventually but stopped again lol , anyway I live in arncott oust outside Bicester, can anyone tell me my nearest specialist that could come and look at it for me ??

Yep. Start by looking at fuel delivery rate then maybe fuel pressure regulator and damper.
I'm with Rob on this one. If you are going to a specialist, suggest they do a fuel pressure test.
Anyway welcome to 944 ownership Sean, it definitely gets better and as is always said.....photo's please.

Check the HT lead connections where they enter the distributor cap, take one of at a time so as not to get mixed up, clean the connections up a little bit of corrosion from standing plays havoc and can display the symptoms you describe.
Clean up the distributor cap connections also.
