944 steering problem

Hi all

I have found another problem with my 944, I have hust fitted a set of 17s and all was going fine but got to the n/s front wheel, I put the wheel on and as always checked for any movement, there was quite a bit of movement top to bottom so my frst thought was wheel bearing, I did a bit of further investigating and it looked like the movement was coming from where the bottom of the shock joins to the hub. The car has had new shocks that was fitted by the previous owner and checked the bolts, they were not exactly tight so tightened them up this helped a great deal but there was still very slight movement so checked the bearing, it seemed fine & I even tightened a little bit but this made no difference so re adjusted & put back together. The car drives fine no pulling to one side no real knocking sounds the problem occurs when I turn right at full lock if feels as there is something loose. The car sort of knocks a jolts (difficult to explain). I have noticed tahat the camber is different on each side so I must assume the guy who put the shocks on never had it aligned properly. I have been reading through other posts & a few say that if you change wheels to bigger it shows up weak bushes/ balljoints i didnt seem to notice it on the original wheels.

I have had a bar out seeing if there is any movement in the bushes but cannot see any but not sure how much you can tell with the wishbone on the car. The movement on the wheel is very slight but seems really bad as said when turning. Could this be a balljoint could it be the camber is not right & when on full lock the wheel is not sitting right.

What are the signs of a weak balljoint. I cant really see anything else it could be other than the bearing

Any help much appreciated oh the car is a 89 2.7

Cheers Simon

hi have you tryed taking the wheel off and using a bar to see if there is any play in the top and bottom ball joints..turning the lock both ways.also check the strut mounts at the top..track rod ends.. carl

Murv - the bolts that join the strut to the hub consist one "normal" and one eccentric bolt to set the camber. If you've just tightened these then I'd assume your camber is out - which (in addition to weird handling which you don't describe) can cause weird noises on lock as the castor takes the wheel to full "lean".

Those bolts you had to tighten not only hold the hub to the strut bottom but they are how you set part of the geometry. If you look carefully one (the lower I think) has some for of eccentric on it. Basically your geometry will be shot. I don't know if that can cause the problems you describe (could it be the wheel "skipping" as it's not pointing in the same direction as the other one on full lock?)

The only time I've had balljoint failure was on a nasty Turbo I bought unseen from an auction and it exhibited itself only occasionally, but when it did one front wheel felt like it was flapping about. If it isn't just geometry then I'd say possibly ball joint. Might be worth checking the castor mount bolts are tight before anything else though.

Hi

Thanks for the replies, yes I have read about the two bolts and I did think that it could be the wheel skipping, but didn't know how to describe it I will check all the bolts. I have had a bar around all the joints I cannot see any movement, the track rod ends seem ok.
The car handles ok I drove 100 miles home after buying it and no wheel wobble on the steering.

Hopefully the weather will be better this weekend & I can have a good look
