944 sub-frame?

Got a call from a friend. His 944 turbo has just failed its MOT on a corroded sub frame mounting.

What does this mean? I didn't think 944 had a sub frame? Do they mean torque tube mounting?

rear suspension mounting points? - as a result of spreading corrosion in the sills/rear wing

Ok - Thanks EDH, any pictures of the offending area, so i know where to look?

Sounds an expensive fix?

Could be an ideal car to buy for me as i can make it into a 944 version of the 968 a stripped out race car for the road.

Sounds like the brackets for mounting the torsion bar carrier or the carrier itself. Either way not the end of the world, secondhand torsion bar carrier is ISTR 50 quid as hardly anyone wants them, the brackets you can buy as a replacement body part in much the same way as sills or wings. No idea how much they cost though. In either case I am surprised it has rusted that badly to be an MOT failure, these parts look rusty on many of our cars for many many years without being so bad as to fall apart. OTOH I would expect a shell with extensive rust in these areas is probably bin fodder. The only turbo I have seen with those brackets rusted out had wrotten floor pan, footwell/bulkhead, door bottoms, rear quarters, front wings, sills. It was being broken by Mattpone on here for parts.

More likely to be around the seatbelt mount. Corrosion doesn't have to spread too far into the inner sill before it reaches this area.

My 944S failed its MOT for rust close to the torsion bar mounting on the drivers side when I first got it. I had it repaired/patched and the guy that did it did a superb job by all accounts for about £150. This should last a few years I hope, it certainly still looks fine one winter on.

A picture of the car show some rust on the sills that have been patched over.....

Mr Empson's website sends shivers down my spine and has my wallet quaking....I dont want to get into a full blown re-build like that...I cant afford it.

Is anyone available on Monday to go and see this car in St Albans?

Looks like the wheels are worth more than the car...Then again you can get a set of those for around £550 brand new now anyway....

That's about the worst I've ever seen. It WILL be a restoration to at least the same level as on Peter's website, many £000s. I'm not free during working hours, but can easily pop over in an evening from Rickmansworth.

That car would need to have 100% perfect mechanicals and interior to be even worth considering the bodywork, and even then I'd think it would be more financially viable to break it.

We've got our Club night at JZ in Kings Langley this Tueasday. I'm happy to have a chat if you want to come along, I can show you the areas to look for on my car....[:)]

I'm planning on gate crashing this too if the weathers good [:D]

I got a mail back from my firend telling me what the MOT failed on:
  • nearside windscreen washer provides insufficient liquid (fixed now)
  • Rear (o/s & n/s inner) subframe mounting prescribed area is inadequately repaired
  • Rear (o/s & n/s inner) subframe mounting is excessively corroded
Looks like a repair to the corrded sub frame mounting has been attempted but failed.

I might give it a miss as i dont have the money for the repairs. The wheels are genuine Veloce, he has reciepts for £1600 for the wheels plus tyres.

If anyone wants the car - its up for £1900 in St Albans. PM me and i will give you the contact details.

ETA: Thanks for the offer Paul.
ETA: Seen a 944 turbo SE on ebay -a bit out of my leauge, but nice any how.
